Best Song Version Part 8: Danny Boy

I was a bit afraid to do this one because there’s so many versions, but cowardice does not a good man make. Anyway, I’m curious to see which one the people of this forum prefer…I have a feeling it might be down to what lineup people prefer.

My opinion on this might be a bit controversial 😅, especially as I know the group performance versions of this are some of the most beloved Celtic Woman songs, but in my opinion, I don’t think the song works as a group performance. Honestly, I don’t understand why they made it into one in the first place. It’s not as though Lynn couldn’t do sad love songs! Take My Lagan Love from Songs From The Heart, for example! Although it’s not a sad song, it’s still sombre in tone like Danny Boy, and Lynn was incredible at that song! To me, the song sounds kind of insincere as a group performance. With Méav, I truly believe that she’s dying and actually singing to her war-bound lover. Same with Deirdre (although somewhat less because almost nobody can compare to the Méav!). (please don’t murder me for this 😭😭)

As you might have guessed, the original version is by far my favourite. The combination of Méav’s stunningly haunting voice with the beautifully tragic lyrics never fails to bring me to tears.

PS: I would also highly recommend Hayley’s version from her album A Celtic Treasure!

I agree about Hayley's version of Danny Boy. The whole Celtic Treasure album is great.

I haven't voted yet. It's like the paradox of overchoice (aka choice overload). Too many good choices to decide. 

EDIT:
I like the Homecoming version because I like Eabha's voice for this song, and I like to see Tara on harp (it's like a special treat after Destiny).

I have to go with Song’s From The Heart / Isle of Hope Tour Lineup.
Probably because they were four doing this and the only in four that takes it to another feat!

As for solo I can love Lynn and Deirdre, but Meav is the Queen!
