This is a fun thread to read b/c I like to see what songs other people like.
It's a little overwhelming to post though. Requires a lot of thought!
If anyone feels the same, maybe start with your fav album(s).
I'll do that & add later.
ANCIENT LAND
Group: Sive. Solo: Ae Fond Kiss. Simple, slow, and beautiful. Other: Love and Honour. One of my top 2 fav CW songs of all-time.
Good choices! No pressure with choosing the other ones, I mean, I omitted an entire album! Sive is definitely a favourite for sure. It’s so catchy! By the way, by “other”, I did mean songs that were neither group songs nor solos, but I guess that’s not too big of a deal. It’s probably my fault for not specifying, I just couldn’t find a concise way to say that.

Here is a recent article about BIIRD. https://www.independent.ie/entertainment/donal-lynch-spice-girls-of-trad-teach-us-that-in-a-world-of-streaming-live-music-is-what-we-really-really-want/a/151629171.html
- Lisa Canny opinion on CW & other acts:
“There are these incredible shows that tour the world, like Riverdance and Celtic Woman and Lord of the Dance, but the representation of women in these groups is still very much outdated,” That seems odd to me…LOTD and Riverdance I understand, but how does Celtic Woman display an outdated representation of women? 😭 I’m asking this as a young woman and feminist myself.
I guess maybe in the earlier days, there was a more idealistic portrayal of the singers, and even today, it’s not as though you’re going to hear the nitty-gritty of the members’ personal lives, but still, I don’t really see how there’s a super unrealistic representation of women in their brand.
I take it "outdated" means conservative in dress & presentation. The music is similar.
Yeah, I don't get that comment or the need for it. Maybe it is just for attention. But you can do that w/o being negative. There is plenty of room in the music industry for different styles & approaches.
Yeah, that still seems like a weird comment to make. And I feel that the only way the music is that "conservative" is how they sometimes change the pronouns from male to female when singing traditional love song (Scarborough Fair, Down By The Salley Gardens, and the 2021 version of Black Is The Colour--Postcards From Ireland really dropped the ball on that part), which is annoying (especially in Down By The Salley Gardens, because swapping the POV really removed the emotional impact of the song), but there's even more songs that don't change them (all versions of She Moved Through The Fair, Carolina Rua, the original Black Is The Colour, The Lakes of Pontchartrain, to name a few), so I don't think that's fair. And although it is great that artists like BIIRD can create this space for women in folk music who don't fit the traditional mould, it feels weird to put down other women for that.

Old topic, but I did some digging.
The Butterfly, alongside the title slip jig, also incorporates what I believe to be two other tunes: The Old Dudeen (reel), and Jigging The Donkey (reel).
The second tune in The Foxhunter is called the same thing.
I'll try to look more in depth, but the site I got this from, The Session, doesn't list any CW albums beyond Believe, and even then, they don't list any DVD tracks.

Hi! Looove that picture. I don't have any ideas, as I am not well-versed enough in that area, but I just wanted to say thank you for doing this!!! What a great service and act of love!!
Aww, thank you! I can get a bit obsessive over my Wikipedia edits… By the way, you seem incredibly kind and I love how you uplift everyone else on here!

I’ve been trying to update some of the ladies’ Wikipedia pages with images of them, because it always looks much better when the articles have pictures attached in my opinion, but the images would have to be public domain or published under a free copyright licence. Does anyone have any ideas or knowledge as to how this works?
Also, for context, five of the members already have pictures attached to their articles. Chloë, Susan, and Máiréad N all have pictures from when they performed at Macquarie Shopping Centre, Mairéad C’s is a photo after a Brisbane concert, and Lisa L’s is a promotional for her album Jupiter.
I don’t have too many specifics in mind, but I think for Tara’s, I’d ideally like her picture to be a promo from Across The Atlantic, specifically the one that she has as her Instagram profile picture. I’ll attach it here. If anyone else has any ideas, please let me know.
I’m trying to work on updating all of their Wikipedia pages, including adding ones for at least Muirgen and Kate, but I don’t know if there’s enough information to create pages for Hannah, Caitríona, Ciara, or Emma.
