Stay safe

Thanks! I'll listen to this one tomorrow, hopefully.

I've been trying to educate people on Facebook about how serious this is already and how much it's going to get (medically and economically) if people don't respect the quarantine. If the hammer doesn't come down hard enough, this is going to go on for years. It's highly contagious, it will mutate over time, and it will get much more deadly over time, much in the same way the Spanish flu did between 1918 and 1920, when it killed like 50-60 million people after its first wave started out just like the common cold (then the second and third waves in August and December started killing people not just within days, but within hours). That was at a time when it was much more difficult for infections like this to spread, and Spanish flu, while highly contagious, was less insidious and less effective at spreading than this Coronavirus. Spanish Flu you would know within hours or at least within a day you were infected and its payload was so effective you would be likely to be dead before spreading it much more. This can incubate for up to 14 days, making it deceptively dangerous.

PLEASE respect the lockdown and all the precautions everyone. Even if it doesn't seem like to you now, this is going to get MUCH worse and will last for at least months, possibly years, especially if we don't finish "dropping the hammer" on it right now to flatten the curve and buy us time.

So many people are talking about how the short-term economic impact is way worse that is necessary and that we're over-reacting. Firstly, we don't know if we're overreacting yet due to lack of testing etc, but based on what happened in Europe and China, we are still near the start of a massive outbreak. This will not go away in weeks or months. I will probably last 1-3 years, especially if we don't slow it down by cutting it off at the pass right now. You think the economic impact of crippling the travel and entertainment industries for 2 weeks is bad? Wait until you see what happens when the shutdowns and lingering impact go on for 6-18 months.

Small businesses will start to fail within months and they make up like 80% of the economic base of North America. Small business won't just "not get paid" for a few weeks and then come back business as usual. They will close their doors permanently. All those workers will be out of work long term and those jobs will not come back for a really long time. That's would cause a legit economic depression that will last YEARS. From an economic standpoint, the government bailout packages that are being talked about HAVE to support small business, not focus on large corporations. And specifically, the bailout / stimulus packages need to focus not on paying workers directly, but supporting the small business owners. The goal should be to keep the small business owners from permanently shutting down and giving the small business owners the responsibility of keeping their employees paid a bit even while the businesses are not operating. I know a lot of people will hate that idea, but that IS the best way to do it and the ONLY way I can think of to effectively avoid a full economic depression.

Stay safe everyone. Don't panic, but please take this seriously, because like I've been saying, it's worse than it looks and it will get MUCH worse before it gets better.
