I thought it might be fun to start tracking the online / quarantune concerts we've attended. Most will probably be live, but I suppose that's not a requirement. A concert recorded after the quarantine started and then posted online probably counts. Q+As or short little performances (ie. <~ 20 minutes) probably shouldn't count, exception being Lisa Lambe's launch event, since it was kind of a big deal and it was officially in place of the original launch event, which would have included a live concert.

Here's my running list I'll try to keep updated.

I have watched several of these Quarantune concerts and q&a's and I am very much enjoying them. This is such a fun way for artists to entertain us while we're all at home.

For 2020, I ended up watching 184 online shows since mid-March.

Month        # Shows
Mar7
Apr31
May27
Jun13
July15
Aug26
Sept11
Oct9
Nov9
Dec36

The shows varied widely in production, video, and audio quality. Many, particularly early in the year, were recorded with a webcam and without professional microphones. A few, like Lindsey Stirling's concert, were DVD quality or better.

The overall quality improved significantly around late November as performers geared up for Christmas.

Highlights:

Byrne & Kelly's "Songs and Stories Tour" show was the first virtual concert I watched since the emergence of the pandemic situation. I enjoyed it and it set the stage for a pretty epic year of virtual entertainment.

The Gothard Sisters were one of the most pleasant surprises of the year for me. I'd heard of them before, but never really listened to their stuff before March, 2020. Their celtic/folk arrangements are brilliant and their songs are fun to listen to. Their shows have been really entertaining. They all play a variety of instruments, sing and tap-dance. Aside from a few live streams that experienced some rough Internet issues, their shows had excellent video, audio, and stability. I loved their content so much I ended up subscribing on Patreon! Once travelling and touring return, I will definitely be travelling to see them live.

My friend Mary Bee did lots of online shows, particularly earlier in the year. Most of the stuff she performed wasn't prepared in advance. She just tried different songs on the spot. She's adorable and her voice is beautiful.

Chloe Lowery: Live in Nashville was the first live concert that actually felt sort of like being at a show. The show was performed at a venue and had a band, professional lighting, and professional camera work. They had video screens set up in the seats. Some people that paid a bit more got to set up their webcams so they "appeared" in their seats. The performers could therefore see and hear the audience during the show. The audience was at times distracting as some could be seen / heard chatting with their friends during the show.

Lindsey Stirling's "The Artemis Reprise" in August was different. She recorded a bunch of her songs with motion capture equipment so she had an avatar performing in a computer generated environment.

A lot of the shows done by the Celtic Thunder performers were fun. Damian's struggled with sound and video quality issues. I really enjoyed the Byrne & Kelly and Colm & Laura shows. Keith Harkin is a really talented singer/songwriter and guitar player. He did multiple shows almost every week and while the video was pretty fuzzy, the music was great!

I was pretty excited for Deirdre and Matt's show at Killua Castle. The setting and lighting looked visually impressive. The initial broadcast was plagued with brutal buffering issues though. Fortunately, they shared the show afterwards so we could actually enjoy it without the audio/video freezing every couple of seconds.

Amy's Wednesday Night Live Streamed shows were fun. The audio was pretty rough at first since she was basically playing background music over her laptop or phone and singing along to it. Later on in the year, she got a better mic and software. Her variety-style skits were pretty funny.

Rebecca Winckworth and Citizens of Song put together some great shows, featuring lots of artists from all over the world. I follow classical crossover group "Ida" (aka Ida Girls) now after discovering them during the Citizens of Song concerts.

Chloë's concert with John Driskell Hopkins at Red Clay Music Foundry was great! The audio quality was outstanding and the video was the type of quality you'd expect from a TV special. It was by far the highest overall quality online show I've seen of Chloë's and at the time, the best overall online show quality I had ever seen. I loved the set list and Chloë, as always, sang her heart out for us.

I also really enjoyed both of Chloë's shows from Red Clay Music Foundry, especially the first one. The video wasn't as crisp, but the sound was great. There were some very funny moments, like when Chloë decided on the spot to add a couple of shows to the set list, forcing members of her band to go run off stage to retrieve sheet music. Her passionate "thank you" speech to her fans was one of the most beautiful things I've ever experienced during a live performance.

The RTE Concert Orchestra Winter Sessions concert "The Best of Musical Theatre" was fantastic! Susan was absolutely incredible and made me feel every single note of what she was singing. Her performance of "Being Alive" (Sondheim) was epic and her take on "I Dreamed A Dream" was breathtaking (I think Anne Hathaway in the film version is the only other performer I've seen deliver that song with such tremendously effective feeling). Killian Donnelly was fantastic as well. [EDIT: The concert also featured Muirgen O'Mahony, who in 2021, would become the newest member of Celtic Woman!] Chloë's dad David Agnew even appeared playing the oboe quite a few times.

One of the most treasured shows of the year had to have been the private Christmas concert with Alex Shape and my friends. Alex put a lot of effort into it and made it a very special experience for us.

Lindsey Stirling's Christmas show had the highest production value by far. It was stunning in every way and had some very intense emotional moments. The sets were amazing and the choreography and cinematography were top-notch. The documentary segment leading up to her hair-hanging performance was one of the most powerful and inspiring things I've ever seen! If she ends up releasing this show on blu-ray or DVD, I will be getting it.

The last online show of 2020 was The Fitzgeralds on New Year's Eve. They're very talented and creative and they're the only group aside from Celtic Woman I got to see live, in person, in a theatre this year.

2020 posed a lot of challenges, but it was an epic year of online entertainment! There's nothing like being in person for a performance and to feel the energy of the performers and the crowd. But the virtual shows had their advantages: I got to experience many performers I otherwise wouldn't have, I got to discover new performers and I got to see more shows overall than ever, all from the comfort of home without the stress and cost of travel.

I hope in-theatre performances return at some point in 2021, but I hope artists will keep some virtual concerts going too!

What Is A "Show?"

My definition of a virtual "show" was a bit ambiguous/arbitrary, but the things I included tended to have the following criteria:
- Around 20 minutes or more (ie. Celtic Woman's "O Holy Night" video didn't count as a show)
- Had a decent amount of "performing" involved (ie. something that was basically an interview show didn't count)
- Was new or re-released since mid-March 2020 (if I went back and watched an old video, that didn't count, but if someone like The Gothard Sisters or Anuna took an old live show they recorded a few years ago and re-released it for entertainment after the start of the pandemic, that counted)
- Pre-recorded performances counted
- I counted shows with paid tickets, optional payment shows (tips, donations, etc), and free shows
- For most of the year, I wasn't counting Mairead Mondays as shows but reviewing my definition. After going back and forth, I decided there was enough "performance" content to count it. Amy Rivard's "Wednesday Night Live, Streamed" felt like shows and the format was similar enough to Mairead Mondays that I decided if it made sense to count either, it made sense to count both.
- I did not count the (lengthy) interviews with Jim Masters. They were a significant investment of time and well done, but I decided to only count stuff that had an emphasis on live performances, rather than almost all interview content.

I suppose the main takeaway is that I enjoyed a LOT of virtual performances in 2020!

I'll whole-heartedly agree with your comment about Chloe's "speech" at the December show from the Red Clay Foundry.  I was one of the few able to be there in person (hey, what's an 8 hour drive both ways to see Chloe).  I've seen a lot of her shows and a lot of CW shows.  That was one of the best.

As of the time I'm writing this year-end virtual concert wrap-up, I had watched 352 virtual performances since the start of the pandemic, including 168 in 2021! It would have been more, but for a large chunk of my year, I was tied up with health issues, work and studying for some technical certification exams. Still, I enjoyed a lot of online content again this year.

Show Highlights:

In March, The High Kings performed a show, with Chloë as a special guest. It was a fun show, filled with great music.

Chloë streamed a couple of her shows from Georgia in March. I watched both, of course. I got a virtual group Meet and Greet with her after the second show. These shows were extra-special because for the first time, she got to build her whole set list from her original songs, including some we hadn't heard before at the time (she would release them as singles later in the year). She was performing with some extra passion and both shows were phenomenal! I also watched both her March shows from Red Clay Music Foundry.

In April, I finally got to see Edel Murphy and Ewan Cowley in Motherland (virtually, of course). Ewan has a great way of arranging songs and Edel got to show a full range of personality during the show. It was really enjoyable.

The next standout show was Fáinne Óir, co-produced by Chloë's dad and featuring Chloë, singing Across the Miles, a song Chloë and her dad had a hand in writing. This show exceeded my expectations. The music was great, the choreography was impressive, and it had a surprisingly potent emotional kick. I gave Chloë a standing ovation for Across the Miles during one of her live shows in Duluth, because her dad was watching online and they both deserved the recognition for their beautiful song.

In July, The Gothard Sisters streamed one of their full live outdoor shows. Their music is so much fun to listen to! I enjoy their monthly concerts on Patreon, but they get to do so much more in their full concerts. Free of the constraints of a tiny room where they record their monthly concerts, they really get to express themselves on a stage. It was a treat to watch!

The next day was Máiréad Nesbitt from the Shalin Liu Performance Center. I had been waiting for that show since 2020. I had planned to go to that venue to see her in person, but due to the pandemic and the border being technically closed for non-essential travel (although that wasn't well-enforced for international air travel), I ended up just getting an online ticket. She put on a great show and it was a memorable venue.

In August, Mary-Jess Leaverland celebrated the 10th anniversary of her album, Shine, with an online show. I've had the album for a while, but the way she told the stories behind her songs and the way she performed them really hit home during this show. If you haven't heard Lighthouse, Glorious, or Stand as One, give them a listen. They were SO beautiful!

Colm Keegan and Laura Durrant always put on good StageIt concerts from their home. In August, they took it to the next level, performing at a different location with a band.

The day after that was Songbook, featuring Susan McFadden and Glenn Murphy. This one really blew me away. Susan was incredible and the song that she and Glenn got to sing together was really special. The other performers and their performances were impressive as well. I saw a lot of online shows this year, but this one stood out as one of my favourites.

Not to be outdone, Mairéad Carlin made her Stageit debut in September with "A Celtic Heart." Her voice is gorgeous beyond description as we all well know. Her Thanksgiving and Christmas concerts were also amazing! I don't think I paid very close attention to the tipping when I went to Chloë's pre-pandemic StageIt shows. I've seen the tipping gets crazy during the StageIt shows of some of the Celtic Thunder performers. But my goodness, the amount of tipping Mairéad inspired was mind-blowing. She deserved it, but you better come with a really deep wallet if you want to snag one of her top 5 tipper rewards at one of her StageIt concerts.

In December, while I was still on the road, Éabha made her online show debut. She spent a lot of time perfecting her songs for a live show and it paid off. She always sounded good, but this show, she sounded better than ever! Her and Gavin Murphy make magic together and while I'm really sad Gavin isn't arranging for Celtic Woman anymore, I'm glad we still get to enjoy his work with one of our favourite performers.

Megan also did an enjoyable StageIt show late in the year. She was nervous, but as always, her strength was inspiring and her voice was incredible! The piano was a bit too strong at times, relatively speaking. But that was her first live online concert. She'll sort it out.

What could I ever do to adequately sing the praises of Alex Sharpe. My friends and I did 2 virtual private concerts with her this year. She pours her heart into every show. She's so entertaining. And that voice is so beautiful!

The last jaw-dropping show of the year came from Leah Barniville, who brought us a recording of one of her full concerts, recorded a month or two ago in a theater. She is a vocal powerhouse! She gets nervous when performing, but that makes me even more impressed when a performer can feel that level of anxiety and still go out there, focus, and blow the roof off the place. Her guests were good, although at times it felt like the guests were getting too much time. She needed those breaks for wardrobe changes though. I lost count of the number of stunning gowns she wore during that show. Six? Seven? Maybe more!

Virtual Meet and Greets:

I wrote to Alex after a virtual concert with her last Christmas that one of the few bright spots of this difficult time was getting to meet her. I feel like I'm a different person at Meet and Greets: more confident, less concerned about coming across like an incoherent emotional wreck (sometimes). I owe a lot of that to Alex and the way she made me feel so comfortable at my very first virtual Meet and Greet in 2020. She made me feel like I didn't have to deliver a carefully written, exhaustively rehearsed statement in the most emotionally impactful way possible to impress her. She made me feel like I could just be me and that was enough.

Early in 2021, I finally got to (virtually) meet Lisa Kelly! She was really easy to talk to. It was like having a conversation with a friend. I wouldn't have had the confidence to do that M+G with Lisa without what Alex had done for me the year before.

My friends and I had a few other M+Gs with Alex in 2021 and they were always special.
I did a virtual M+G with Byrne and Kelly, a perk of the ticket I had for one of their live shows in Buffalo that ultimately got canceled. They're really funny.

I also had a bunch of group Meet and Greets with Éabha and Megan through Patreon. Éabha's M+Gs have more people and she keeps them more structured, having lots of news and content prepared for us each time. Megan runs a smaller, more freestyle M+G and they are really fun: she has some entertaining tour stories and she is both personable and hilarious!

Wrap-Up:

2021 was another tough year, but our favourite artists, once again, were there for us, to deliver some great online entertainment and to bring us joy. I'm not quite sure what to expect from the ride in 2022, other than, perhaps, a really bumpy start. Will I get to 500 shows by the end of 2022? Hopefully not, because if I do, that would mean another long and difficult year for an industry that has already been ravaged. But while I hope the performers I follow can get back on the road with some consistency, I hope I still get to continue enjoying those performers I've discovered during the pandemic from afar.

Wishing our forum community and all our favourite artists around the world a happy new year!
