Mairead Nesbitt / Rocktopia
« on: April 11, 2018, 12:09:48 AM »
Rocktopia

Rocktopia a show that fuses classical music with classic rock.

Web site: https://rocktopia.com/

DVD:

There was a Rocktopia PBS special / DVD recorded in Budapest. It was REALLY good. It's like a hybrid of classical music and the powerful Trans-Siberian Orchestra sound. The song choices and arrangements are great! The singers have incredible range, power, and heart and are backed by a big orchestra. It's probably my favourite non-Celtic-Woman concert DVD. Note: it was made before Mairead was part of the show, so Mairead's not in the concert special, but it is still really good.

Tour:

Mairead debuted on the Rocktopia tour last year on March 28, 2017.

I saw it twice with Mairead in the show and it was awesome! The set list was similar to what was on the DVD, but there's nothing like experiencing it live.

Mairead was featured quite prominently in the show, up front for many of the songs.

Broadway:

Rocktopia has a limited 6-week run on Broadway, from March 20 – April 29, 2018.

There are different guest artists joining the show on broadway every week or so:

This week's guest is Dee Snider (from Twisted Sister). Here he is performing "We're Not Gonna Take It" along with Mairead.

« on: April 10, 2018, 10:25:44 PM »
All you Celtic Thunder fans out there probably recognize the names Byrne and Kelly (and probably already knew about this tour):

http://www.byrneandkelly.com/ontour/

Nicole Hudson is touring with them.  ;D

They're basically fallowing the Celtic Woman tour bus in my area though, so I'll miss them. Lol.

Tough luck. Better luck next time, fellas.

ANÚNA is a choral ensemble based in Ireland.

The group was founded in 1987 by Michael McGlynn, who also arranges most of their songs.

A lot of our Celtic Woman ladies have performed with Anuna at some point in their careers:

Lynn
Méav
Éabha
Orla
Deirdre
Tara

Anuna was featured in Away In A Manger on Orla's Celtic Christmas DVD. If you look closely, I think you can see Eabha in the choir. ;)

Rebecca Winckworth, who was a special guest on the Destiny DVD, has also performed with Anuna.

Michael McGlynn is one of Eabha's cousins.

Some other notable names that have performed in Anuna:

Hozier

Tara News / Tara's uncle Gerry passed away
« on: April 06, 2018, 02:36:36 PM »
Tara's uncle Gerry passed away yesterday morning (April 5, 2018):

It sounds like Tara's going to brave it out and stay with the tour for the moment.

This has been such a difficult few weeks for our ladies. Deepest condolences to Tara and her family. These ladies are always here for me in my time of need and I wish there was something more I could do for them now besides sending my regards. I feel so helpless.  :'(

https://www.facebook.com/taramcneillmusic/videos/1942990745734264/

It has been a very tough couple of days here. My Uncle Gerry passed away yesterday morning. I really wish I could be there for my family, especially my dad... but I know he has gone to a better place. Gerry had a life long passion collecting lamps... so I’m sure he’s lighting up heaven now! And I just got the news this morning that our Celtic woman founder, Dave Kavanagh passed away. Dave made my dream to be in Celtic Woman come true and I will be eternally grateful for that. He believed in me. He was an incredible man. As I think about these two men moving on I just wanted to play this beautiful hymn, ‘Nearer my God to Thee’. Praying for my family and Dave’s family xx

Celtic Woman News / Dave Kavanagh has passed away
« on: April 06, 2018, 11:32:47 AM »
Chariman, CEO, and co-founder of Celtic Woman passed away on April 6, 2018.

https://www.facebook.com/celticwoman/posts/10156284950137838

It is with great sadness we share the news that our Chairman and Chief Executive Dave Kavanagh passed away peacefully this morning at Blackrock Clinic. Dave will be sorely missed by his wife Rhona, his son Luke and daughter Phoebe, his family, all those who work with him at the labels, the artists and his many friends both within and outside the music industry worldwide.

Dave was a giant of the music industry with a massive life long love for it. The industry will be a lesser place without him.

From being U2’s first booking agent to managing Clannad to global success throughout the Eighties and then bringing the musical phenomenon Celtic Woman to huge International success and launching the career of The High Kings amongst many others. He has been at the helm of the Celtic Collections record label since 2004 bringing great Irish Music to an audience around the world.

Celtic Woman may not have become what it did without Mr. Kavanagh at the helm. He indirectly had a huge impact on almost all of our lives and he will be missed.

Rest in peace, sir ... and thank you.

Amy Rivard / Candy Canadiana Links
« on: March 30, 2018, 12:04:09 AM »
Candy Canadiana is Amy Rivard's biggest fan (alter ego). She loves spreading cultural awareness and is the unofficial ambassador of Canada. Although she's very kind, she also has a playful and mischievous side, which sometimes gets her into trouble.  :'(  She even got put in a penalty box once!  :o  She loves promoting Canadian products and other Canadian content. She especially loves maple syrup!

Candy sometimes doesn't have time to post a lot of things because she's busy spreading joy to Canadians far and wide, both at home and around the world.  ;) But when she does have time to post, she's pretty entertaining!

Here are some links where you can follow the one and only Candy Canadiana and learn about her!  :)

HomeComing / Celtic Woman: Homecoming PBS Special
« on: March 26, 2018, 10:11:27 PM »
Here's an edited version of what I posted on November 27, 2017 after seeing the Celtic Woman: Homecoming PBS special. Well technically, it was November 28 by the time I posted it and you can probably tell it was late/early ... it's not my best writing. At the time, I hadn't seen the DVD yet and I actually saw it 3 more times on PBS since writing this (3 different PBS stations, including twice on my local station).  Hope you enjoy!

------------------------- SPOILERS BELOW !!! -------------------------

Least Favourite Things

- There weren't very many negatives to this production. It was well done!

- I found the volume a bit low on this particular PBS station. I had to turn it up to about 150% of my normal TV-viewing volume for it to be an ideal sound level. Not quite as extreme as the Divinas DVD, which I usually have to play at 200% or more of my normal volume.  :D

Favourite Moments

Anabel Sweeney:

I knew from people that went to the recording at the 3Arena that she was going to be good and was very well-received by the audience. I also knew she was REALLY good from her My Land and Orphan Girl audition videos for the Celtic Woman competition on YouTube. But she absolutely blew me away! Fields of Gold was exceptional! The piano arrangement was very nice. Anabel's voice was gorgeous, but it was the way she sang, with such feeling, that was the most impressive. I can't say that it was the best version of Fields of Gold that I've ever heard (doing so would be blasphemous), but I will say this with absolute conviction: this performance was tied for the best performance I have EVER heard over this song. I can see her being in Celtic Woman one day. She was that good!

The song titles:

It seems like such an insignificant thing, but I really like the way they presented the titles for the songs on the screen. They did a sweeping fade-in of the text, accompanied by a tasteful glitter effect that made it seem very magical. They've always done a great job with the song titles and this was no exception.

The Dancing:

Mairead Carlin's during Dulaman was near-epic! She is sooooo good! I loved it during the tour and I loved it even more during the special!

Susan seemed even more graceful during She Moved Through the Fair than she was on tour.

Eabha's Nerves:

That probably sounds like an odd thing to call a highlight. She was a bit nervous, particularly when introducing Isle of Hope, Isle of Tears. I list this as a highlight (for me), because it emphasized that these girls are human beings and like everyone, have to overcome challenges, even when they're performing. As someone that struggled mightily with performing a long time ago, I was soooo proud of her for holding it together. I respect her even more as performer and as a person for having seen her go through that. <3

The orchestra:

They had a decent-sized orchestra on stage with them. It doesn't make financial sense for them to tour with an orchestra, but it does add quite a bit to the grandeur of the production and fills out the sound very effectively.

The Kesh Inn:

As it was on the tour, this was really fun, both in terms of the tune and its overall execution. Side-note: The girls came out and played their "TAR" instruments during The Kesh Inn instead of TAR. Susan played spoons, Eabha the tin whistle, and Mairead played her accordion "Beatrice."

Tara:

I LOVED her on tour and she seemed even better in this special! She moved around the stage so well. She plays with lots of feeling and those little facial expressions were even more adorable up close. I honestly think most members of the general viewing audience, in spite of missing Mairead, are going to LOVE Tara!

Most Surprising Moments

- Anabel: for some reason, I was thinking she was going to be exclusive to the DVD. I was pleasantly surprised when I got to see her.

- The ending: I had suspected they were going to end on Teir Abhaile Riu since that's the way they ended the sizzle reel. In the sizzle reel, the songs are almost always in order, and include the first and last numbers in the show. Still, I was expecting the Parting Glass in some capacity. Nope! It looks like it's a DVD-exclusive. TAR wasn't a bad song to end on, but it was a bit surprising.

Other Moments of Interest

They added some echo to Danny Boy. It probably wasn't necessary, but it ended up being a nice effect and worked out pretty well.

At the end of TAR, Eabha said "you have been the most incredible audience." Shades of Lisa Kelly.

Pledge Breaks

As far as pledge breaks go, it was reasonably good, but I have seen more effective segments. The pledge drive on my PBS station for The Bloody Irish, for example, was VERY well done. They really made me feel passionate about me getting the DVD. I mean I was probably going to get it anyways because of Lisa Lambe, but they REALLY marketed it well.

I will say this though, they did an excellent job of emphasizing how amazing the current girls are. They addressed the fact that the group has changed a lot, but re-iterated that the current girls were every bit as talented as we've come to expect from Celtic Woman. I was so happy I almost cried.  :D

They were especially high on Tara! They repeatedly praised her skills on the violin, that she could play harp, dance around the stage, and even sing! They liked her long, red hair, too. I think they understood from previous campaigns that there would be some resistance to a new girl replacing a long-time favourite. They didn't compare her to Mairead Nesbitt (they didn't mention Mairead). They just focused on what makes Tara special and I thought that was the perfect way to approach it.

The premium (front 2 rows, non M+G) tickets sold pretty quickly, which is encouraging, and the phones seemed busy. They actually had people holding for a while.

The hosts had some knowledge of the group, but were definitely not superfans. One of them consistently mis-pronounced Tara's name (she pronounced it "TER-a" instead of "TAR-a"). The other host pronounced it correctly a few times. In typical fashion, the group was occasionally (maybe half a dozen times) referred to as "The Celtic Woman" or occasionally "Celtic Women" (plural). I wasn't offended this time. I just found it funny that they're going to all the trouble to promote this group that has been one of the backbones of their station for the past 13 years, and they still don't know the name of the group or its members. They also said the group started in 2005 ... well, not exactly. They debuted on PBS in 2005, but the original show at the Helix was on September 15, 2004.  ;)

I'm not sure if they did it intentionally or not, but when describing the voices of the performers, they said it was like listening to voices of angels.  ;) That was a nice touch.

Anticipated Reactions

- Most fans of Current Celtic Woman will love it!
- Some fans who have become disenchanted with the group over time will probably not feel differently about this special than they did about other recent specials.
- However, some fans of the New Celtic Woman who just didn't enjoy Destiny (particularly, the Destiny special) will enjoy this production more. It was a set reminiscent of Emerald, in contrast to the the minimalist set of the Destiny special. They did away with the video screen for the Homecoming special, so that should appease those that didn't care for the video screen on the Destiny or VoA tours.
- Most people who haven't seen / heard Celtic Woman before will probably love it.

Overall Impression

I loved it!!!

The first time I saw it, I got so excited I got a little burned out after the first half of the show and was a little low on energy for the second half. In the last segment, they really raised the energy level again. The audience was clapping along during Eabha's Sean Nos songs and they finished strong with The Kesh In and TAR.

In spite of burning myself out a bit on account of my overwhelming excitement, I really did enjoy the whole show. The stage looked great, the dresses were stunning and everything sounded fantastic ... in short, this show was just about everything we have come to admire about this group we love so much.

Thanks everyone for reading my novel and I hope you enjoy Celtic Woman: Homecoming as much as I did!

Lisa Kelly / Lisa Kelly: The Voice of Ireland (2017)
« on: March 26, 2018, 12:52:09 AM »
My trip to see Lisa Kelly: The Voice of Ireland (2017)

Setting the Stage:

Lisa's show came at the end of a very eventful month of April, one in which I:
- Saw Celtic Woman: Voices of Angels twice
- Saw Rocktopia twice
- Met Mairead Nesbitt for the first time
- Met Celtic Woman (Susan, Mairead Carlin, Eabha, and Tara) for the first time, during my first Celtic Woman Meet and Greet through PBS

That was probably the best month of my life so far, but it was also pretty draining. Looking back on my posts about those shows, I must have been really exhausted afterwards, because I actually posted surprisingly few details about them until now.

The Trip:

The day before flying to Atlanta, I had driven all the way from Canada to Erie, PA, stopping to pick Karsten up in Buffalo on the way to the Celtic Woman Meet and Greet. The following morning, I drove Karsten and I back to Buffalo so we could catch our respective flights to Atlanta to see Lisa's show. We had to leave pretty early in the morning. I was still buzzing from the Meet and Greet the previous evening. Somehow, I managed to get 3 hours of sleep, which for me, is sometimes enough.

At that time, I had never flown anywhere to see a concert before. I had been on many flights before, but it was actually my first time flying alone.  :o It was a bit of a different experience planning and keeping track of everything, rather than just tagging along for the ride.

I stayed in Atlanta near Turner Field, where the Atlanta Braves used to play. It was my first trip to Atlanta and I decided to treat it like it might be my only trip. I crammed a LOT of attractions into a couple of days. One thing I didn't get to see was The Fabulous Fox theatre, where Celtic Woman: Believe had been recorded. The Fox Theatre tour is apparently a popular attraction, as they were selling out tickets 2 weeks in advance. I had it on my list of things to do, but in the crazy weeks that led up to the trip, I forgot to book those particular tickets in advance. :(

It was around a 40 minute drive from Atlanta to Peachtree City.

Because of traffic in Atlanta (it was just after the overpass collapse, making things even more hectic), I was a bit late getting back to the hotel after seeing attractions on the morning of Lisa's show. I was rushing and getting VERY excited about finally seeing Lisa. As a result, I almost left my ticket in the hotel room. :o

Pre-Show Gathering

Before the show, I got together with a bunch of fans at The Mellow Mushroom. I had met a few of them already a few nights before at the Rocktopia show in Atlanta. I'm a ridiculously shy person, so meeting about 40 people I hadn't met in person before was pretty intimidating for me. One of the may things I love about Celtic Woman is that the excitement they make me feel can be strong enough to overpower even powerful feelings of anxiety.

A few of the people I chatted with were susprised I had travelled all the way from Canada. Honestly, I was surprised too. But I had been waiting for far to long to see Lisa Kelly live for the first time and I didn't want to wait any longer.

The place was pretty packed. My visual memory is pretty poor, so it was difficult to remember who I had met already. Fortunately, the entertainment for the pre-show gathering started before I introduced myself to two many people twice.

The scheduled pre-show entertainment, part of The Pixiedusters, was somewhat interrupted by American Hope (one of Lisa's opening acts) making a surprise appearance at the pre-show gathering.

The food was good, although I did have to wait a while for the beverage.

I managed to win one of the signed photos at the fan gathering auction in support of the Lisa Kelly Voice Academy.

Unplanned Tour of Peachtree City

Between the pre-show gathering and the show, I had some time to spare and had some things in PTC I was planning to look at. Unfortunately, between my GPS was really having a hard time that week. It had me going in circles for a few hours trying to find some conservation area and the Lisa Kelly Voice Academy. At one point it brought me to a recycling drop-off point. At first, I didn't realize exactly where I was. It turns out, I happened to be near a back entrance of the Fred Amphitheatre and I almost walked in the Lisa Kelly Voice Academy rehearsal. Good job, security.  ::) Although in their defense, I was wearing a bunch of Lisa Kelly Voice Academy merch from the per-show gathering, so they probably thought I was part of the show.  ;D LOL!

Oh well, I guess I'll have to find the Lisa Kelly Voice Academy next time. Next time I'm brining a printed map and/or a human guide.

The Fred Amphitheatre is located in one of the most beautiful areas I've seen for a venue, in the middle of a wood, surrounded by trees. I could see the sun setting between the trees off to one side. It is definitely one of the coolest places I've ever been to for a concert.

I'd say attendance wise the place was about half full. Not as big a crowd as they had for some of their previous shows, but considering a lot of the crowd was from out-of-state or out-of-country, I was still pretty impressed.

The Preshow:

By the time I actually found the Fred Amphitheatre (my GPS was telling me to turn in the wrong place for that too, so I'm lucky I even found the place), the pre-show acts had already been going on for a few minutes. I took a brief look at the merch table. Too brief a look as it turned out. I thought I already had all the merch that was laid out there, but there was  apparently a stack posters Lisa had signed.

I was seated in the front row of the bleachers. Between the bleachers and the stage, there was a section of tables. I had been a bit late getting tickets, trying to work out if getting to Lisa's show would even be possible considering all the other shows I already had planned for that April. It was a decent view, although it was probably over 50 feet from the stage.

The Opening acts Sinséar and American Hope. I thought both were good. The Irish-flavoured Sinséar was more my cup of tea, but the country group American Hope did a good job too. I think both acts were Lisa Kelly Voice Academy alumnists.

The Show:

Scott Porter (Lisa's hubby and former Celtic Woman CEO) came onto the stage and welcomed us to the show.

When Lisa finally stepped onto the stage I was pretty overwhelmed with joy. May It Be was the first Celtic Woman song I ever heard in its entierty. Here, on the stage before me, after all those years, was the incredible woman who had opened my ears and my heart to the most important group in my life. That moment felt pretty surreal.

Lisa's show was much like Voices of Angels in that it featured a wide spectrum of songs and styles. Like most shows, I remember more of what surrounded the show and the concert itself was a blur of joy.

Some things I enjoyed most about the concert:
- Finally seeing Lisa live!
- The duet of "For Good" by Lisa and Chloë. That was just beautiful beyond words. <3
- Special guest Chloë Agnew's comedy / storytelling (she's soooo funny!)
- Chloë's duets with Dermot
- Getting to sing along with Lisa and Chloë!!! I had been dreaming of that since I saw "Believe." #Chlia taught us how to sing "Wild Rover." It was a really fun song. The way Chloë performed her part was both hilarious and priceless.
- The venue was quite breathtaking.
- Seeing the Lisa Kelly Voice Academy and Kelly Porter Dance Academy students perform live.
- Scott porter had a dance off with some of Lisa's kids. That was entertaining, although the use of stobe lighting during that segment was perhaps excessive.
- When Sarah, one of the fans in attendance, got a hug from her favourite singer, Chloë, near the end of the show. That was hearwarming and soooo sweet! <3

There were a few local guests that performed during the show that were pretty good as well.

Overwall, I thought the show was great. I did feel like Lisa was holding back a little bit vocally compared to what she would do during her Celtic Woman days, but I really didn't mind. She still sounded fantastic! I was soooo happy to hear her beautiful voice and to finally see her live.

Post-Show Gathering:

After the show, I got together with one of the fans at a nearby IHOP. I think our large gathering overwhelmed the staff there, as it was quite a wait for food. It was worth the wait, though. Being from outside the US, I really wasn't familiar with IHOP. Boy, I am now. The food there is AMAZING.

While waiting, I got to chat with a few more fans I had seen around online, but hadn't met before in person. I'm sure I came across pretty awkward during the pre-show and post-show fan gatherings, but considering how incredibly nervous I was leading up to it, I think it went pretty well. In the end we all love Celtic Woman and we all love Lisa, so that gave us a lot of common ground right off the bat.

On the drive back to the hotel, my GPS did its best to get me lost one more time. Getting lost on a poorly lit back road after midnight in Atlanta during a heavy downpour while trying to keep my eyes open wasn't an ideal scenario, but I eventually made it.  ::)

What does the future hold for CWazyTom?

Going to see Lisa Kelly live is something I should have done a long time ago. 2018 is going to be an interesting year, starting with a couple of Homecoming shows in a few weeks. Lisa's show this year is slated for the end of August, rather than in spring and will be at a different venue.

It could be a very busy second half of the year for me, with possibly 10 or more shows packed into 4 months (possibly 3-4 shows requiring separate flights to different states). But my plan is to go to Lisa's show again this year. It was a great experience meeting so many people who are as passionate about Celtic Woman as I am. Lisa and her music mean the world to me and I'm really excited to see her again!
