Celtic Woman / Celtic Woman: Origins and Hidden Gems
« on: August 07, 2023, 07:47:39 PM »
I thought it would be fun to create thread dedicated to discovering the origins of some of the Celtic Woman songs we know and love.

This is going to blow some minds, especially for some of the newer fans that weren't on the old Celtic Woman forum.

Here are a few to get us started:

Song: Tara's Tunes
Origin: 3 traditional tunes:
- Spatter the Dew
- Farewell to Ireland
- Hunters House

Song: The Enchanted Way:
- Tune 1: ?
- Tune 2 (0:52-1:43): The Swallotail Jig
- Tune 3 (1:43 - 2:13): Morrison's Jig  (I think, I'm not sure about this one yet)
- Last tune (last 38 seconds): Cooley's Reel

The Kesh Inn:
- The main part of the tune is The Kesh Jig
- But I think the second melody in there is part of Morrison's Jig (1:37 - 2:08 on the Homecoming album)

Song: The Calm of the Day / The Banshee:
- In this case, these are the actual names of the tunes :D

Song: Across the World
- Tune 1: The Rocky Road to Dublin
- Tune 2: ?

Song: The first part of Dúlaman in Emerald, which Lisa Lambe performed
Origin: An Cailín Álainn

Song: O, America
Origin: Melody: Sweet Rememberance of You (William Joseph). Brendan Graham heard the melody, loved it, and added lyrics.

Song: The Butterfly (Celtic Woman)
Origin:
- Part 1: The Butterfly slip jig (traditional)
- Part 2: The Butterfly Reel (Liz Carroll)

Song: The Pacific Slope (A New Journey)
Origin:
- Tune 1: The Cock and the Hen
- Tune 2: ?

Song: The Coast of Galicia
Origin: Traditional, but not sure of the original name

Song: The World Falls Away (Believe)
Origin: Part of the song uses "Tamhair Do Lamh"

Song: Bean Phaidin (chorus in the Ancient Land version)
Origin: Nead Na Lachen (aka The Foxhunter's Jig, no relation to melody of The Foxhunter in Believe)

Song: The Foxhunter (Believe)
Origin:
- First tune: Kid ar an Sliabh
- Second tune: ?

Song: Mná na hÉireann (Believe DVD)
- The first tune in the set is as titled
- The second tune (played right after Mná na hÉireann on the Believe DVD) = ?

Song: Dulaman (Emerald DVD)
- The song Lisa opens the track with, before the main melody = ?

Song: Dulaman (Emerald DVD)
- The tune during the extended (very extended) intro to Níl Sé'n Lá = ?

Song: Shenendoah (Emerald DVD)
- There are at least 2 tunes. Shenendoah is obvious, but what is the tune after that?

Song: The Soft Goodbye
Origin: the first tune in Dance at the Crossroads (Heart's Quest album by Fir Na Keol, aka David Downes and Chloë's dad)

Song: How Can I Keep From Singing (Destiny)
Origin: An American folksong, originating as a Christian hymn. It's now in public domain.

Which other origins can we discover?

General Discussion / What is Threads?
« on: July 06, 2023, 10:58:47 PM »
You may have heard people mentioning Threads recently and they're probably referring to the new social media app released by Meta (Facebook / Instagram).

It's essentially a competitor to Twitter.

https://about.fb.com/news/2023/07/introducing-threads-new-app-text-sharing/#:~:text=Threads%20is%20a%20new%20app,to%205%20minutes%20in%20length.

It has a new app you have to install on your phone, but it's pretty easy to set up. It only took me a couple of minutes. You can transfer your profile (username, profile pic, accounts you follow, etc) from Instagram during the setup process.

Máiréad Nesbitt is on Threads already and it's likely at least some of the other CW members (past and present) will at least experiment with it.

Alex Sharpe / Alex shows in August
« on: June 22, 2023, 08:59:14 AM »
Alex announced on socials today that she's planning some concerts in Utah for August 2023.

https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100046589301801

Quote
Hi Folks!

I have the opportunity to come to Utah in August to perform and I am considering doing 1-3 intimate concerts for about 50 people which would include either a three course meal or just a drinks and desserts menu.

The venue would most likely be in Northern Utah, but if there is enough interest, I could do more concerts within the Utah area. Post in the comments and let me know if you would be interested.

Oh! and I would love to know what songs or what genre of music you would like to hear me sing.

Thank you!

Alex Sharpe / Christmas Tour with Jenny Oaks Baker (2023)
« on: June 16, 2023, 04:53:15 PM »
I'm getting ahead of myself, but Jenny Oaks Baker is planning to do a 2023 Christmas tour, this time expanding to 20 cities:
https://latterdaysaintmag.com/highlighting-our-latter-day-saint-musicians-jenny-oaks-baker/

Hopefully they have a less hectic travel schedule than last year.

... And, Alex is officially on the tour!

https://www.mesaartscenter.com/index.php/shows/other-presenters/jenny-oaks-baker-and-family-four

AND just in case I wasn't overwhelmed with exciting news today yet, the Joy to the World! A Sacred Celebration tour in 2023 is apparently coming to Canada! I'll have to keep an eye out for tour dates, but I won't have to wait long: tour announcement is scheduled for June 20th!

Now, a concert in Canada doesn't necessarily mean it would be easy to get to ... there's a lot of space in Canada, but still...

I'm going to need a sedative if there's any more excitement today.

Anyways, these are the tour date we know about so far:

Dec 19, 2023: Bank of America PAC, Thousand Oaks, CA
Dec 23, 2023: Mesa Arts Center, Mesa AZ

Thanks LakersCeltic for already putting those in the calendar. I was a bit behind on forum posts.

Also there's an outside chance she does the Kurt Bestor Christmas concert again, but likely not unless it lines up with the tour schedule. The first site suggest maybe Dec 8, 2023, but the second site is offering tickets for Dec 24, 2023.

At the place where it all began, the Helix, Celtic Woman will celebrate their 20th Anniversary ... a few weeks shy of the 19th Anniversary of when their first PBS special was recorded on September 15th, 2004.

https://celticwoman.wufoo.com/forms/celtic-woman-a-20th-anniversary-show/

I suppose they'll end up touring the show on the year of the 20th anniversary of the first DVD recording, 2024. I don't think we know when the Celtic Woman concept actually started though. Maybe it was conceived in 2003 and took a year to get all the music ready, performers contracted, PBS filming organized, etc. I'm sure at least part of the album was recorded before the DVD. I seem to recall Mairead Nesbitt saying before that the actual anniversary of Celtic Woman was June 9, 2004 (Chloë's birthday), although I've never been able to independently verify that. As a perfectionist though, it bugs me that they're not doing this show on September 15, 2024 instead.

P.S. I'm creating this thread separate from the calendar entry so we can keep a thread history after the calendar entry gets cleaned up. ;)

Deirdre Shannon / What are the odds?
« on: June 12, 2023, 11:24:55 PM »
That was a clickbait subject, huh?

Now that you're reading this, what do you think the odds are of Deirdre guesting with the Celtic Tenors on their 2024 North America tour?

I'm thinking low (she guests with them from time to time in Ireland and elsewhere in Europe, but I don't recall any such guests performances in the US or Canada (at least not within the past 7 years or so). That said, there's a Celtic Tenors show for 2024 that I can easily drive to and a pretty low change of a conflict with another show, given the timing, so ... thinking about it.

Alex Sharpe / Síoda
« on: May 30, 2023, 08:03:18 AM »
Recently, Alex teased that there was something new coming with:
- Alex
- Fidelma Kelly (manager of the Honeydews)
- Nicky Lewis
- Clare O'Malley

It appears they are forming a new 4 performer group called Síoda (pronounced something like SHE-o-da or SHE-o-DA depending on the region in Ireland you're from).

The name means "silk."

We can only speculate thus far whether they will be performing at local events (ie. weddings and corporate events), recording some music, touring, etc.

Chloe Agnew / The Brave Collide Shows in New York
« on: May 21, 2023, 08:51:28 AM »
Earlier in May, I went to see the debut of The Brave Collide in the US. The first show was at the New York Irish Center in Queens on Long Island. It was a small venue, but the crowd was great! It was a very different set list and atmosphere from Chloë's solo shows. There were lots of fun covers and original songs. The harmony was great and Chloë was having the time of her life on stage!

The second show was at Rockwood Music Hall in Lower Manhattan. The venue was a lot more sketchy than the first show. Rockwood has 3 separate stages. 2 are accessible primarily from the "good" street. Stage 3, where The Brave Collide performed, was accessed from the back side of the building, with so bars across from the entrance. It actually took me like 20 minutes to find the place, since the door and entrance sign were spraypainted over with graffiti. Real classy. The inside was a little better. The groud floor was a bar. I chatted with some Brian McGrane / Irish Tenors / Deirdre Shannon fans before the show at the bar. The show itself was in the small candlelit basement.

Both shows were attended primarily from people in the area who heard about the show through local advertising. Chloë and Brian weren't sure how their style would be received and were grateful to have a couple of familiar faces in the audience.

I loved the shows! They were refreshing and really entertaining. There are more Brave Collide shows coming and hopefully you'll have a chance to see them somewhere near you!

Lisa Lambe / Nightvisiting
« on: May 21, 2023, 08:36:19 AM »
After 4 years without seeing Lisa Lambe, I finally got to see her again last night! It was a long trip from Canada to Listowel, Ireland. The airport in Toronto (especially that section the flights to Ireland leave from) is a joke: poor layout and general lack of space make that section very crowded. If you follow me on Instagram, I posted some photos where there are literally thousands of people packed from wall to wall for 6 gates that are all next to each other with limited seating and overlapping lines. The overnight flight was delayed a few hours as usual.

I got some half-sleep on the plane. Getting in late caused some transportation problems. I didn't have many bus options left that would make it from Dublin to Listowel in time.

Listowel is a nice little town. There's a river walk and bridge with a nice view down the river. I stayed at a hotel about a minute walk from the venue, which was in a small old church.

It was general seating and I didn't get to the venue until after the doors opened. Fortunately, since the show was in Ireland, there was still a seat in the front row. For whatever reason, audiences here don't like the front.

Lisa was accompanied by 3 musicians that played a variety of instruments. The show was a combination of her singing and telling tales from Irish folklore. Most of the songs were songs I'd never heard before (except on the livestream version of her show on Patreon). It was different than any show I've attended before and was quite refreshing. It was an acoustic show and the songs were well arranged. We got to sing along on a few songs (Green Grow the Rushes, Galway Shawl). The audience was pretty reserved, content to just listen to Lisa's beautiful voice rather than participate.

After the show, Lisa came to meet with the audience. She spent quite a bit of time chatting with me and taking some photos. She also signed a poster for me. It was a nice evening!

Lisa hopes she'll get to tour the show in the US some day, although there are no immanent plans to do so.
