Track 14 on the album Ancient Land by Celtic Woman is entitled Garden of Eden, and it was written and performed by Éabha McMahon.  She wrote a little about her experience writing songs on Instragram.  It makes me a little happy to think I get to be the first person to transcribe the lyrics and put them online.  Here you go:

Oh you run through the Garden of Eden and what did you see?
Was it thrilling, fulfilling, and all it was cracked up to be?
Oh you left her alone after placing a ring on her hand.
Oh you run through the Garden of Eden, you're borne from this land.

Now that woman you vowed, did she chased you out with her drum?
And did love turn to anguish when all of her crying was done?
And the ground broke beneath you, you lost every thing that you know.
Oh you run through the Garden of Eden, where no one should go.

If I could hold you for one more hour, would you lie with me among the flowers?
I wrote you a letter every day but the Garden of Eden took my love away.

And you begged for forgiveness, you cried until no tears were left.
But that woman of wisdom had wished for you only the best.
Now your beard overgrown and disheveled, you're barely a man.
Oh you run through the Garden of Eden, as fast as you can.

If I could hold you for one more hour, would you lie with me among the flowers?
I wrote you a letter every day but the Garden of Eden took my love away.

There's no pain in this garden, the sky knows nothing but blue.
But perfection is nothing, when all she can think of is you.
And you broke her to pieces, set fire to a wall that she built.
Now you're left in the garden alone, with nothing but guilt.

If I could hold you for one more hour, would you lie with me among the flowers?
I wrote you a letter every day but the Garden of Eden took my love away.

If I could hold you for one more hour, would you lie with me among the flowers?
I wrote you a letter every day but the Garden of Eden took my love away.

But the Garden of Eden took my love away.

Thank you for this transcription!! This was one of the first songs I was drawn to when I was listening to the album previews. Have you thought of posting these in lyric sites so more people can find out about it? :o

Hi, Rax!  I thought it would be cool if the lyrics only existed on this forum so that people searching for the lyrics would find the forum and consider joining it.  I don't really see who would benefit from posting it on more sites, except that those sites would make more money.  Of course, I didn't create the lyrics and will have no grounds to complain if someone copies them to other sites.

Oddly enough, this was the last number I listened to in the car , playing the Ancient Land CD as I picked up Sasha (a.k.a. the Keltic Kazackh ) from track practice after school and I had it going on in my head.....there`s plenty of room since nothing else is in there  :P

Let's compare my original transcription to the version on azlyrics.com:

Line 1, 4, 8, 14: "Oh you run ran through the Garden of Eden"

Line 4: "you're borne barred from this land."

Line 5: "Now that woman you vowed to, did she chased you out with a drum?"

Line 6: "And did that love turn turned to anguish when all of her crying was done?"

Line 14: "through the Garden of Eden, run as fast as you can."

Line 19: "set fire to a wall all that she built

Line 1, 4, 8, 14: I don't know.

Line 4: I don't know.

Line 5:  I'll agree with azlyrics.  Éabha has a long pause after "vowed", and then seems to smash "to she" together in one note.  My version was ungrammatical.

Line 6: I'll agree with azlyrics except I am hearing "then" instead of "that".

Line 14: I'll agree with azlyrics.  I can hear "run" if I listen very carefully; it's in the same note as "as" so it's hard to pick up.

Line 19: I'll agree with azlyrics because setting fire to a wall doesn't make much sense.  I think Éabha just sang "all" with a little vibrato, so that's why it sounds like two syllables.

Some questions for the people who care:

  • Do you hear "Oh you run" or "Oh you ran" four times in the song, including the opening line at 0:08?  Or do you hear a mixture of tenses?
  • Do you hear "borne from" or "barred from" at 0:26 (line 4)?
  • Do you hear "then love" or "that love" at 0:36 (line 6)?

I heard "ran" all four times. That would seem to be the right tense in the context of the surrounding lyrics too.

I'm relatively sure it's "barred from." I could easily be mis-hearing it, but that makes the most sense to me in context and seems to match the sound I perceive most closely.

I think it's "then love." It sounds close to "their love" but I think "then love" is more likely.
