Mairead Nesbitt / Celtic Sounds (March 9, 2019)

Celtic Sounds
Youngstown Symphony Orchestra + Mairead Nesbitt
Saturday, March 9, 2019 @ 8:00 pm
https://youngstownlive.com/event/celtic-sounds-youngstown-symphony-orchestra/

Celebrate the “Wearing of the Green” with Celtic violinist Mairead Nesbitt of Celtic Women and Rocktopia fame and the students from Burke Irish School of Dance.

It's less than 5 hours drive away from me, so I got myself a ticket. Well...it's less than 5 hours if the roads are good, which might not be the case with early March lake-effect. With bad road conditions, it could take 7-8 hours to get there, so I guess if the weather sucks, I can't go. At about $60 for front row, I guess it's worth the risk though.

I hope I don't regret this...

Now I just need Chloë to perform somewhere close by (maybe Buffalo or Cleveland) the day before or after. Lol.

Ancient Land / Re: Ancient Land Album: Reviews and Thoughts

Cover and Liner Notes:

Now that the album is finally in my hands, I'll write what I thought the moment I saw this album cover artwork while in Ireland: this is my favourite Celtic Woman album cover of all time! The colours are great and the picture of the castle just brings it to a whole new level of epic, given that I was there. The artwork has a warm, somehow soothing quality to it. The pictures of our ladies on the inside of the booklet look gorgeous and they really pop!

Some of the text on the inside of the booklet was a little tricky to see in places where there was dark text against a dark background, but how often am I going to need to read those sections of the liner notes? It's not a big deal at all.

Caroline Nesbitt did the liner artwork / design in case anyone was wondering.

CD Bonus Tracks

The CD version of the album had two bonus tracks compared to the digital version:

   The Enchanted Way

   Ballroom of Romance

Ballroom of Romance was from the Homecoming Tour and The Enchanted Way was a new song.

Both songs did a fantastic job of projecting fun and energy!

These two additional songs actually add quite a bit to the album. The digital album had a soft sound overall. With these two extra songs, the album now has a lot of upbeat numbers, adding more balance to its remarkable variety:

- Homeland
- Follow Me
- Tara's Tunes
- Garden of Eden
- The Enchanted Way
- Ballroom of Romance

The two bonus songs are top notch and it is definitely worth getting the CD to hear them!

Overall Impression

I never thought I would say this but for me, this album is in a dead head heat right now with A New Journey as my favourite album ever! It's certainly top 2 if not alone at the top.

There's so many new songs to fall in love with. It has some really beautiful slow songs and lots of songs with great energy too!

If you haven't heard "The Enchanted Way" or "The Ballroom of Romance" (the two bonus tracks from the CD), I think you'll love them. They're so much fun!

For those getting the album (and those that have already received it), look at the liner notes. There was something in there that was so beautiful I almost cried. I hope what Mairead said at the show on night 1 makes it to the DVD, I really do. <3

I hope you enjoy, everyone! The girls are so proud of this album and they should be. In my opinion, it's some of Celtic Woman's most beautiful work. <3 <3 <3 <3

I added the two bonus tracks from the CD version of Ancient Land to the poll.

You should be able to modify your vote if you so choose!

Ancient Land on Tour / Re: 2019 Tour
« on: October 26, 2018, 07:20:26 PM »
As the years have gone by, it seems that PBS and CW don't have as good a relationship as they once did.  We are seeing less stations have M&Gs.  They used to have advance info about the tour and the dates.  Now, it seems more like PBS is an afterthought.

Celtic Woman was PBS's their all-time highest rated program at one point. I'm sure they still get pretty strong viewership for Celtic Woman, but as much as they did 10 years ago or even as recently as Believe? Probably not. Hopefully that's all it is and Ancient Land will bring the disenchanted fans of yesteryear back in droves!

Chloe Agnew / Re: Chloe tour with Nathan Carter (2018)
« on: October 26, 2018, 05:29:51 PM »
I guess I forgot to post an update here.

Festival of the Stars has multiple artists and their guests scheduled at various times across two days (December 3-4).

At one point, Chloë was listed on her site and on bandsintown as performing on December 3rd with Crystal Gayle and on December 4th with Natahan Carter. But the promotional material implied she was only performing with Nathan Carter, which made a lot more sense to me as they've performed together before.

I spent weeks over the summer going back and forth with Bandsintown, the venue, the Festival of the Stars people etc. about which show Chloë was actually doing at Festival of the Stars.

I also ended up trying to contact Chloë through social media and through fan mail on her site. I even trying contacting her Inspired Management contact on her site. I even contacted Crystal Gayle, her management company, and some of her fans to figure out what was going on.

While most people didn't get back to me or weren't helpful, I finally managed to get the attention of bandsintown. I told them I suspected that they had Chloë listed for the wrong day, that she was performing with Nathan Carter (Dec 4) instead of Crystal Gayle (Dec 3). After some discussion on their side, they concluded that she was performing with Crystal Gayle on Dec 3. They therefore removed her show from Dec 4 on bandsintown and left the one on Dec 3. Uh ... what????

So I asked them check again, restating that all the promotional material was stating she was performing with Nathan on Dec 4, not Dec 3. I asked them to check with the performers and the venue to confirm if they weren't sure. Finally, they decided I was right and removed her Dec 3 performance and added the right one for Dec 4th.

When Chloë announced the show later, she confirmed she was performing only with Nathan on Dec 4th.

So that was fun...

Anyways, today I got some good news from some of the contacts I accumulated through the course of that adventure and confirmed Nathan is doing a Meet and Greet after the show on Dec 4 in St. Catherines, Ontario! It's essentially. a meet and greet in the lobby for anyone that attended the show. No special ticket required. If it's consistent with what they were doing last year, that means Chloë will be in the M+G too.

Which means I'm only a few weeks away from getting to hug Chloë again!!!

This comes on the heels of the disappointing news earlier this week that there will be no M+G for Celtic Woman at the Best of Christmas show I'm going to (there had been a M+G at that venue on their previous Christmas tour, so I had my hopes up).

Sweet Chloë has once again brightened up my week without even realizing it. :D

The Celtic Woman Ancient Land CD is available now!!!!  ;D

The album still isn't digitally available in some regions, but hopefully will be soon.

P.S. With this new release comes another wave of people following Celtic Woman on social media for seemingly the sole purpose of disparaging the current group. I'm not really sure why they're following Celtic Woman if all they're going to do is complain and upset the real fans of the group.  ::)

Because they have nothing better to do with their lives and need hobbies.

And btw any word on if there's a Target Exclusive with bonus tracks?

It doesn't look like there's going to be any Target-exclusive version this time. Target still only has the regular album listed on their site. :(

I think they decided that people just wouldn't be able to handle anything more awesome than the regular CD.  ;D

General Discussion / Re: Opinions on m&g legitimacy?
« on: October 26, 2018, 12:08:40 AM »
Here's what I've got so far (you probably already know most of this, but just compiling the clues):

- NJTV (PBS) lists the M+G for Sunday March 24, 2019

- March 24, 2018 is the day Celtic Woman performed at NJPAC on the Homecoming Tour (the show when Susan returned to the tour after a few weeks back in Ireland). That was a Saturday.

- So if there's a mistake, they at least got the day of the week right (March 24, 2019 is a Sunday).

- NJPAC doesn't list the event yet

- Ticketmaster doesn't list the event yet

- There's no show listed on the CW site for March 24 yet. But they're performing in nearby Rochester, NY (I'm going to that one) on March 26.

- So an unannounced show actually being at NJPAC on March 24 could fit the evidence so far.

I don't think PBS would post it if it wasn't certain and it seems unlikely they made a mistake with so many other puzzle pieces fitting into place.

So while I can't tell you for certain there's a show there as PBS's pledge gifts indicate, I think it's pretty likely.

That said, I would suggest calling PBS first thing in the morning to see if you can get a manager on the line or somebody that can clarify what's going on.

Good luck!

If you're still in NY for some reason on March 26, stop by Rochester. A bunch of fans I know will be going to that one and I already confirmed there will be a M+G.

That's the exact same date as they were at NJPAC on the Homecoming tour isn't it?

I'll do some digging.

Celtic Woman / Most Special Live Song
« on: October 25, 2018, 11:39:56 PM »
What's the most special song to you that you've heard Celtic Woman perform live at a show, in person?

Hearing My Land and Westering Home on the Destiny tour meant a lot to me because of what a huge role those two songs played in the past few years of my life. Almost all the amazing dreams of mine that have come true recently I can trace back to those two songs.

But I think that the most special song I heard live was Susan performing From A Distance during the Homecoming tour. By April (the beginning of March, actually), I was already pretty sure that that Susan was going to be taking a break at the end of the tour, although I didn't know the reason until later. One of the things I told her during the Meet and Greet was that before Celtic Woman, From A Distance was once my favourite song. It's also one of the songs I requested when Celtic Woman was asking for song suggestions a few years ago. To hear it performed so beautifully by Susan, one of my favourite singers, was truly special and I had to let her know how much that meant to me.

I got to see two shows on the Homecoming tour. I was worried when Susan had to take a few weeks off to go back to Ireland for a funeral that I was going to miss out on hearing her sing it. But fortunately, she rejoined the tour in time for the concerts I went to. During the second show, I was feeling a bit emotional because I knew I was probably not going to hear her sing it again and wanted to savor every moment.

I wish she had recorded it on an album or DVD, but I'm soooo glad I got to hear it performed by her beautiful voice while she was with Celtic Woman.

Susan, if you end up reading this one day, thank you from the bottom of my heart. <3

The Best of Christmas tour 2018 / Re: No Christmas Meet and Greet for Me
« on: October 25, 2018, 10:43:37 PM »
No Tom do a stage door M&G I have always had good luck doing them

I might try if it's not too cold, but I've only had it work once and even that took two tries (I went back to the stage door the night after I saw Riverdance to meet Edel).

I'd need a spotter too because I can't see very well at night anymore. If the girls were bundled up (as they should be), they could walk right past me in low lighting and I wouldn't know.

I think I'll just enjoy the show this time and I'll go to a bunch of M+Gs next year.

The Best of Christmas tour 2018 / No Christmas Meet and Greet for Me
« on: October 25, 2018, 08:22:48 PM »
Sadly, there will be no Meet and Greet for the Best of Christmas show I'm going to this year.

There was still legitimate hope up until today.

The bad news is that much like after Tara joined, I'll have to wait until spring to meet Megan.

The good news is I get to see Celtic Woman again in about a month, and that's the very best of Christmas news.

I've been a big fan of Celtic Woman since around "A Christmas Celebration" (when I was still in high school, I feel very young lol) and this is my first time dipping my toes and participating in the community.

"A spaceman came travelling in a ship from afar..."

My username is a mouthful (and a Doctor Who reference), so you can call me Rax! I come from a place very far away from any CW hotbeds (...the Philippines), so I tend to make do with recordings and albums because flying to see them is a far off dream that I can't afford.

CW has affected me in such a way that it has motivated me to learning Irish (through stubborn self-teaching and bugging friends who are fluent in the language). Progress is a bit far off because it's not really a language one could learn easily here, but I'm still going at it! I am a bit of a language nut, as I'm also learning Hawaiian but that's neither here nor there.

Additionally, I'm a transcriber! I've transcribed (or hunted down and pieced together lyrics in Gaeilge) several songs of "Voices of Angels" in AZlyrics, and I'm excited to do the same for "Ancient Lands" when Spotify Philippines decides to release it here.

"Good to be home to your Christmas Pipes!"

The first time I listened to Celtic Woman was during a Christmas chorale competition in high school. We were asked to sing a known Christmas piece and then one of our own arrangement. I don't think Christmas Pipes made it into our final arrangement, but we had won the competition that year! (Don't ask me when, because I likely won't remember anyway. :P)

After that I had listened to their A Christmas Celebration concert, then thought nothing of it because I was 14 and I wasn't particularly sticking to any genre or artist yet. Celtic Woman came back around in college when I was anxious and homesick (I was living alone in San Francisco for an exchange programme), and I found that only their music could calm me down. After that, I played their music on repeat on and off, and now I'm here and definitely committing to their music and community.

"Ní neart go cur le chéile."

As I've said before, I can't afford to go to any Celtic Woman concerts (unless they do a World tour and land somewhere close, like Singapore, again) but it's definitely up there on the things I want to do eventually! For now, I'll be waving flaglets in the sidelines cheering them on.

Thank you for allowing me to join the forums and I hope to continue experiencing Celtic Woman's lovely music with you all.

P.S. My favourites have been Lisa Lambe, Susan McFadden, and Éabha McMahon!

Welcome to the forum!

I think fans like you who love them but can't see them are some of the most loyal fans they have and I hope you get to see them soon. Hopefully you can help spread the word about the and Ancient Land CD where you are (it releases on Friday). Then they will have a lot of fans there and will have to come perform there more often.

What's your favourite Celtic Woman concert special so far?

I say "so far" because Ancient Land is about to become your favourite Celtic Woman concert special.  ;)

P.S. If I hadn't misplaced my TARDIS, I would go back to September 15, 2004 and enjoy Celtic Woman from the very beginning next time.  ;D #DrWho
