Ancient Land / Special Ancient Land Pre-order for Audience Members
« on: October 09, 2018, 10:20:51 AM »
There's a Ancient Land CD pre-order for audience members of the the Ancient Land shows at Johnstown Castle.

Celtic Collections sent out an email with instructions to audience members today.

The special pre-order is essentially a signed copy of the CD with a 1 EUR discount on the order.

The special pre-order is for the CD only.

The special pre-order did not refer to additional bonus tracks beyond the regular CD.

The special order ended up being $10 more for me than through an Amazon pre-order (after exchange rate and additional international shipping charges), but I decided it was worth it to have a special signed copy.

There may be more signed copies available through another exclusive offer yet to be announced (ie. like Target did last year), I'm really not sure.

Please don't share the instructions publicly. That will cause unnecessary confusion and work for Celtic Collections and could possibly affect the special pre-order for people that attended the shows.

Ancient Land / Celtic Woman: Ancient Land on Wikipedia
« on: October 08, 2018, 08:28:00 PM »
I finally got around to creating a page on Wikipedia for Celtic Woman: Ancient Land
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Celtic_Woman:_Ancient_Land

It's got the basics, but still needs some work to survive the auditing, so I'll keep working on it. We'll have much more content once the album debuts on the charts and once the liner notes are available. It definitely needs more independent sources though.

I also linked the Celtic Woman: Homecoming - Live from Ireland article and the main Celtic Woman page to the Ancient Land article.

If there's anything I need to fix or that I should add, please let me know.

Ancient Land / Ancient Land Album Release Teaser
« on: October 08, 2018, 06:41:50 PM »
Celtic Woman issued an album-release teaser for Ancient Land today:
https://youtu.be/TPzSD3DXuL4

The CD release date is October 26, 2018.

They have a lot of short clips of the amazing songs on the album.

It's effective at giving people a taste of the variety of good stuff they'll hear on the album.

I think the clips were a little shorter than they needed to be. For someone that hasn't heard the album yet, this teaser might be sufficient to wet one's appetite. But by extending the clips a little bit (instead of transitioning between songs so quickly) I think it could have been even more effective.

For a casual fan or a fan on the fence about whether or not to get the album, I'm not sure those clips alone are enough to make a difference. Sure, someone could easily go to iTunes or Amazon and listen to longer previews of each song (or listen to the whole digital album on Spotify in regions where it's not blocked). But not every casual fan or potential fan that stumbles across the video is going to have the motivation or patience to do that. First impressions are pretty important and I think they had an opportunity to do more with this teaser than they did.

I do love the artwork (attached) displayed during the video though.

Other Musicians / Emer Barry

Back in July, Emer Barry did a music video of Wuthering Heights.

This is absolutely awesome!

Personally, I think this is at least on the same level as Hayley's version.

Lynn performing Follow the Heron Home
https://youtu.be/b2Lp5XWIvWs

My favourite version for a long time has been Deirdre Shannon's.

Lynn's gorgeous the voice is very well-suited to this song though.

The guitar arrangement wasn't bad, it I don't think it was ideally suited for this song. I think there were better ways to compliment Lynn's voice.

I think most of us who have been fans for even a short time have shows we wished we had gone to but didn't / couldn't for one reason or another.

It would have been amazing to go to A New Journey at Slane Castle or Songs from the Heart at Powerscourt. Seeing Ancient Land at Johnstown Castle lifted a huge weight off my shoulders from missing out on those previous outdoor specials.

I definitely regret not going to the DVD recording of Emerald in South Bend, IN too. I could have gotten to that show, but I just wasn't in the mood to go to any shows back then.

I regret not going to the one in my hometown just after I saw the Destiny PBS special in 2015. Things were so bad then that I didn't even know about the Destiny special until I stumbled across it in the listings and turned in 8 minutes after it started. I loved the music from Destiny sooooo much that for the first time in a really, really long time, I actually thought about going to see an actual concert (it was part of the Home for Christmas tour). I didn't have any vacation days left and it would have been a long drive on a weeknight, but still checked for tickets (a few days later, only to find out they were sold out).

Side-note: The funny thing about that last show is it was the reviews for that exact show that are the reason I got involved in social media and the forums. For whatever reason, that crowd was not impressed. A bunch of them left part way through the show. They wrote that the girls didn't care about what they were singing, that they weren't as talented, and that there was nothing left of the Celtic Woman they knew. Not everybody that went to the show felt that way, but there were enough of them that it got me really upset, defensive, and worried that if I didn't go see Celtic Woman now, I wouldn't get another chance. That's why I saw my first Celtic Woman show on the Destiny tour. It's the reviews of that show in my hometown and some of the review of the 10th Anniversary Tour and Destiny DVD that really got me motivated to take a more active role in supporting the group I loved so much.

One of the ones that stings me the most though is during the 10th Anniversary Tour. Alex was in the rotation at the time when they came within an hour of where I live. I was too depressed then to both looking for tour dates in advance and getting excited for things, so I didn't know about the show until I had committed to something else out of town. When I found out I was going to miss Alex, I was really devastated. There's a lot of Celtic Woman shows I regret going to (some of them I didn't regret until long after the fact). But that one still hurts, and probably will until I finally see Alex.

I think the show that hurts the most though was actually a solo show. Hayley performed nearby a few years ago and like so many shows during those years, I wasn't checking proactively and didn't know about it until it was too late. I missed a lot of ladies that way, but I've since seen (or will see soon) most of them, including Orla. Hayley though does almost all her limited touring in the Asia / Pacific region now, with a limited number of shows in Europe. She almost never does shows in North America. That makes it difficult and very expensive to see her. Her voice is so breathtaking. I really hope she comes back here soon because of all the CW ladies I haven't seen, I don't know if I regret missing out on anyone as much as Hayley. <3

Celtic Woman / Gavin Murphy
« on: October 01, 2018, 09:50:20 PM »
The musical director, Gavin Murphy, has received kind of a mixed reaction from the fan base since he took over for David Downes in 2015.

I think a lot of people got turned off by Destiny because it sounded so different. I really liked a lot of the things he did in Destiny. Yeah, it wasn't as big or as full a sound as Downes had in his arrangements, but he had a lot of genius stuff in the harmony and backing instrumentals. Destiny was the first (and so far only) Celtic Woman album to get nominated for a Grammy, so I guess some people in the recording industry agreed with me.

Voices of Angels got another divided reaction. They went really big with the orchestra and had the most classical sound they've put forward in an album. It had quite a bit of energy and was an exciting album to listen to. Some people liked the more grander and more percussive sound. Some people called it soulless and hated how Murphy tried to re-arrange ("butchered") their long-time favourites. I think what he accomplished with Voices of Angels was really impressive. He took some truly beloved Celtic Woman songs and put his own unique spin on them. For the most part, I thought he did a masterful job of re-imagining those songs and putting his own epic stamp on them.

One of the most hurtful reactions I've read is that the girls that Gavin Murphy (and Méav) selected don't have as much heart or aren't talented enough. To me, those are really disrespectful and ignorant things to say. Most of those people listen to the music, but don't know the girls. Either that or they can't get over the fact that their favourite singers are no longer with the group. For some of those fans, Celtic Woman died the moment Lisa Kelly left. Trashing the girls is totally uncalled for. Everyone in Celtic Woman right now is really, REALLY talented and they pour their hearts out for us when they perform.

Some people feel like Murphy's arrangements don't have the same complexity or life to them like David Downes' work did. It's said that "it just sounds ... off" or that "the magic is gone." I kind of understand where those opinions are coming coming from, even if I don't entirely feel the same way. For me Murphy's arrangements are just different. He doesn't try to write music the same way as David Downes. He has his own style. I like it. But some people either don't like his style or can't get into it because the Downes way was perfection ... the best and only way.

One of the most interesting opinions I've read (recently here on the forum and in a few other places) is that David Downes wrote his arrangements specifically for the girls: their strengths, their personalities and and their voices. Gavin Murphy on the other hand writes his arrangements the way he wants them to sound and then has the performers perform them his way. It's speculation (at least in part), but of all the dissenting opinions on Murphy, this one might be the closest to the truth.

Personally, I think Gavin Murphy writes great music. But perhaps the magic that people say has been lost was in David Downes' ability to get the best out of every singer, every instrument, every note. Regarding that, I will say that as much as I have loved almost all the work they've done in the post-Downes era, I do feel sometimes like they're capable of even more.

All that said, I think that Ancient Land is Gavin Murphy's best work. The harmony is intricate, soothing, and at times ethereal. A lot of the backing instrumentals are clever and really beautiful. The turns in County Down, the gorgeous strings in Faith's Song, and the inspired take on Mná Na hÉireann are but a few examples. I thought he made excellent use of the band and a medium-sized orchestra and while the way he leveraged the girls' talents wasn't perfect, I think he did take advantage of a lot of their strengths (even in ways we might not have have expected, in the case of Megan).

There will be people out there that still won't like what he's done in Ancient Land and maintain that Celtic Woman will never have the same life and soul as it did when David Downes was the musical directory. I choose to appreciate all the good aspects of what Gavin Murphy has given us and I'm grateful that we still have beautiful music to listen to, performed by the most wonderful women in the world.

Hopefully I haven't offended anyone with my opinions or in the way I've presented the opinions of others. I just felt like it was important to get a lot of these thoughts organized and hashed out in one place. I do appreciate other people's opinions, even the ones I don't agree with. It's the opinions I disagreed with the most that got me into social media and the forums. They're the reason I started going to see their live shows and most importantly, the reason I came to love Celtic Woman as much as I do today. <3

Forum Questions & Comments / Board icons: when should they show in color?
« on: October 01, 2018, 06:22:07 PM »
I'm wondering if we should flip the color scheme for the individual board icons.

Right now, it's using the standard, which is basically there's a colored icon if there's new posts in the board and greyscale if there (for example, if there's a new post in Megan's board, it displays the colored icon for her board, otherwise, it displays the icon for Megan's board in grey).

That's the standard configuration, but I also find it's a bit bland. Most of the time, I don't have unread posts for very long, so all the boards are a dull grey for me.

Wondering if we should switch that around to have a board's icon grey when there are unread posts and colored when there aren't new posts waiting.

I don't think there's any technical limitation that would prevent us from flipping the icons around to behave like that (haven't tried). Would take a bit of time, I suppose.

I guess it also depends how many new posts there are for you. If there's lots of unread posts for you most of the time, then most of the board icons will be in color for you most of the time, which looks prettier.

What's everyone's preference?

Should board icons be in color when there are new posts or while there are no new posts?

Susan McFadden / Beware Impersonators
« on: September 30, 2018, 01:35:15 AM »
Some people have been getting messages from someone posing as Susan McFadden on Facebook. All of Sue's accounts are *verified* so if you're not getting the message from a verified account, it's not her.

Someone's been impersonating Chloë on Facebook messenger too, using her name and profile picture, but has practically no posts. All of the real Chloë's 'official' accounts are verified. The fake ones are not.

Some of the girls (including Chloë, Tara, etc.) do have separate personal accounts that are not verified (Chloë's is under an alias so people don't bug her on her personal account). Impersonators know that celebrities have unverified personal accounts. They pretend to be one of the girls wanting to chat with you from their personal account because you're such an awesome fan.

In rare cases when one of the girls messages me to say something, it has always been through a verified account. In addition to the profile picture, verified accounts have a special symbol: a blue circle-shape with a white checkmark inside.

There are sick people out there who want to take advantage of how much we love and trust these ladies. So please be careful giving out any personal information online, even if you think you know who's on the other end of the conversation.

Ancient Land / Ancient Land Videos
« on: September 29, 2018, 11:10:38 PM »
-- SPOILER WARNING --

One of many videos of the show that have surfaced so far from the Celtic Woman: Ancient Land DVD recording. I imagine this will get taken down pretty quickly, so enjoy it while you can.

The audio quality in the recording isn't great (the audio was fantastic live). But it has a great view of the girls and the castle, all of which look spectacular!

Ancient Land / Strength and Joy

Last year Celtic Woman ran a contest during the summer to attend the Homecoming DVD recording at the 3Arena in Dublin...

- The winner agreed to the use of his/her name and image in any publicity material
- The competition ran run every week for four weeks beginning Monday 3 July and ending Monday 31 July 2017

I knew that contest was going to a longshot as there were only 4 winners. But I was kind of heartbroken at the time that I was going to miss yet another Celtic Woman DVD recording. I actually considered booking a trip to Ireland on short notice just to see the DVD recording and a couple of other things, but there wasn't enough time to do research and scramble something together last year. It also would have been difficult financially at that particular time given how many shows I saw out of town last year.

I'm reminded, as I often am, of a quote from Amy Rivard: "what's yours can't pass you by." It means that what's meant to be will often find a way, sometimes in ways and at times we least expect. Even doors that get slammed in your face may not be closed forever.

Even though I didn't win this contest, it did start a rather important process. It was the first time I actually looked seriously at visiting Ireland. I started thinking about what kinds of things I wanted to see over there and I started longing to go there really badly. That all set the stage for me to be able to put together a 12-day trip on 5 week's notice this year to go see Ireland. If it wasn't for some pre-planning and the burning desire to see Celtic Woman in their home country, I probably wouldn't have even entered the draw this year and then I would have missed out on seeing the incredible DVD recording at Johnstown Castle.

Whether you perceive it as destiny or coincidence, there's no denying that the events in our lives often become intertwined in ways we can only appreciate after the fact. Thinking back on the past few years when I started making a lot of my long-held dreams come true, I'm reminded of another quote from one of Amy Rivard's songs. It's one of the things I wish I had been able to say during my brief interview with PBS at the castle: "pain and sorrow teach us strength and joy." It's some of the hardest times that lead us to appreciate the best things in our lives. Even just a few years ago, I never would have had the confidence or the desire to do some of the amazing things I've done. Over the past few years I've finally realized that even the hardest experiences in my life were worth it, because it's those times that led me to love Celtic Woman so much.

Chloe Agnew / Chloe talking about her new music (July 18, 2017)
« on: September 29, 2018, 02:53:42 PM »
Back on July 18, 2017, Chloe announced (excitedly ... ok, really REALLY excitedly) that she had signed with a record label and she was working on a new album.

Here's a live video of Chloe announcing the big news!
https://www.facebook.com/ChloeAgnew/videos/1790823137599551/

I post this again now for a few reasons.

First, I'm migrating / preserving some old posts from some of the other forums while that content is still available.

Secondly, Chloë was soooo excited for this and I just love watching her be happy.

Lastly, after watching this video again today, I realized that the two of the songs she talked about being on this EP actually didn't make the EP:
- Like An Angel (which was released only as a single)
- Across the Raging Sea (which hasn't been released, but it is beyond amazing): https://soundcloud.com/joshuaspacht/across-the-raging-sea

I got to hear her perform Like An Angel live with an orchestra. Hopefully next year she'll bring back Across the Raging Sea.

Chloë eventually did release her EP "The Thing About You" in 2018 and it was amazing too!
