Go to 1h02m25s in the link below to hear Lynn call into a radio show and give her very pessimistic view of what it's like to be a singer/songwriter in Ireland:

I think she posted this on Facebook tonight, but then her post disappeared.

Thanks for posting. That's fascinating. And sad. I think she posted similar thoughts when she started her Patreon page.

A lot of people probably assume they're all making money by the boat load because they're famous. And it sounds like they don't get a lot of income from their side hustles (singing lessons, weddings, funerals, etc) either.

Lynn posted an in-depth essay on her website. The title is:
'Irish female artists on mainstream Irish radio'

This is not 'news' but I hadn't checked Lynn's FB for a while.

On the Jan 16 post which is the topic of this thread (Irish female artists on mainstream Irish radio), there is a reply from John Walsh (Megan's dad). You might find it interesting.

Here is a true story Lynn Hillary. My daughter, Megan Walsh, left Celtic Woman a year ago to pursue her own way - and she is finding out the hard way that it is tough out there .... She put out a single and mostly Americans responded. The amount of plays was dismal, none in Ireland. She can walk down a street in America and be recognised, but here few know she exists - and not only that, the amount of Irish people who have never heard of Celtic Woman is mind-blowing. How sad is that? This echoes what you say. Yes, it's time for all you female Irish artists to form an army and shame the industry here into action!

Very interesting this truth of a fact indeed!

I've heard similar comments from some US artists.  They point out several issues.  One is social media.  Most of what we see on Facebook, etc. is determined by an algorithm.  In other words, a computer program makes a decision on what to show you, based on a lot of factors.  How that works is a big mystery. In general though, it seems to point you toward existing, popular trends.  New music, movies, etc tend to be ignored.

Second, at least here in the US, is that radio stations are now mostly corporate owned.  The music is programmed by the corporate ownership and sent to multiple stations.  They all play the same songs.  There are very few independent radio stations any more.  So, how do you break into this?  Good question.  Just being a great musician isn't good enough any more.

I just came back from a 2,000 mile drive.  So, since my newer vehicle does not have a CD player, most of what I listed to was Sirius satellite radio.  I don't know (or care) how many stations there are.  I found 4 or 5 I like, but they are things like music of the 70's, spft rock, etc.  There are even channels dedicated to one artist.

I've always wondered how some of the former CW ladies were doing after they left.  We know Lisa Kelly appears to be successful in her venture.  Not sure that a single artist can make it unless they get that one big hit that makes them famous.

Taking Taylor Swift out of the equation, how does a tour even make sense financially for the artist?  Maybe if you are CW where you do a show every night.
