Title: Celtic Woman Symphony Tour 2023
Post by: Granuaile on February 08, 2023, 12:40:58 PM
Celtic Woman just confirmed a Symphony Tour for 2023. At least something for this year.

So I'm thinking that means a Christmas tour?   Basically, the month of December?

Exactly! Though Muirgen hinted something for later this year, may an Ireland shooting or something like that.

The problem with Christmas tours is there are maybe only 20 shows.  They do try to spread it out over the country, but it can be difficult to get to a show.  I live in Florida.  For last years Christmas show, I ended up flying to Ohio for a Tuesday night show.  Luckily, I'm retired, but still it's a day up and a day back in the middle of the week, and as we know, flying is not fun.

Thanks for the info!

Yeah. It also can be difficult to plan because of how many places they skip in addition to the unpredictable climate that could cause missed/cancelled/delayed flights + troubles on the road. I have been wanting to go for almost six years. Been a big fan of their christmas music for many years (I watch the Home for Christmas DVD every year).
They've only come here twice with the christmas show.
They brought the very first one and were supposed to come back with the second but the orchestra went on lockout due to failed contract negotiations with hopes to reschedule -- they were still on strike a year later and in the end never did.
The christmas tours 2014--2016 & 2018 were all misses for us here. I went six years between my first two Celtic Woman shows. 2019 they came back but at a different venue and I was unable to go -- The two years after that we all know what happened. I had REALLY high hopes that this past year would be the year but I was crushed again.
They've been GREAT about coming here for non-holiday shows however (Only twice have they ever not come here: X & Homecoming.  We all know what happened with the Celebration tour -- COVID. Celebration became Postcards from Ireland).

Right. I guess we can't assume they will even come to our area. Over the years, I've looked at the back of the Christmas t-shirts for the tour dates. And I always had the impression it was generally an East Coast tour only. (I'm on the West Coast.) Ok, that's not strictly true. But the point is, you guys are right --- it's hit & miss.

You raised some interesting points.

2011 Christmas show -- California, Washington, Florida, Ontario, PA, VA, NY, MN, IL, MI, GA, Colorado
2012 Christmas show -- CT, PA, MI, IN, IL, CA,AZ, TX, GA, AL
2013 Christmas show --  NV, VA, WV, PA, Ontario, MA, NJ, TX, SC, IN, GA
2014 Christmas show -- WA, AK, CA, CO, IL, IN
2015 Christmas show -- VA, PA, NJ, DE, CT, PA, NY, Ontario, OH, FL, AL GA, SC  (There were 2 locations in Florida.  I went to one)
2016 Christmas show -- CA, PA, NJ, NC, MS, GA, MI, WI, IN, IL, CO, UT
2018 Christmas show -- NJ, NY, PA, KY,TX, AK, WA, CA,UT,, IL, MO, GA
2019 Christmas show -- PA, NJ, IN, OH, MN, CO, UT, NC, GA, MS, AR, PA, OH, MI, WI, IA

I think they did an acceptable job trying to hit every area of the county, considering there are only 20 or so shows.

A couple years ago, i plotted out the tour stops on a map.  Kind of crazy what they have to do.

I live in Florida.  I'm lucky I can go see several shows without things being too crazy as far as travel.  Here's the number of shows they have had in Florida.

2007 (Spring)- 4
2007 (Fall) --6
2008 -- 3
2009 -- 8
2010 -- 7
2011 -- 10
2012 -- 5
2013 -- 10
2014 -- 6
2015 -- 12
2016 -- 6
2017- 9

Thanks for that. That is really interesting to see all the Christmas tours listed together like that.

It looks like my state (CA) has 5 hits & 3 misses. So that's way better than I had thought.

Before I saw that list, my general feeling was GA & PA seem to get a show almost every year. And I was right about that. Without keeping tabs closely on other states, I thought FL would have been on that list more. Esp since I 'knew' GA was always on the itinerary.

Received an email today from the Colorado Symphony, announcing it's 2023/24 Season.  It includes a Celtic Woman: Best of Christmas Tour Concert on Tuesday, December 12, 2023, at Boettcher Hall, in Denver CO.  Single tickets go on sale on June 12, 2023.

Gregg and I will most likely go to this concert in Denver. We always love seeing the Christmas tour there. Denver is a great city and we love the venue and the Symphony.

They used a photo of the Magic of Christmas group of Mairéad, Éabha, Tara and Megan - gosh I loved that foursome sooooo much! Miss that lineup!

Oooo I like that question.

Part of me wants to see one of the performers I haven't seen perform in person yet: Deirdre, Méav, or Hayley. There's almost no chance of me seeing Hayley or Deirdre otherwise. But I'll go off the board here and say former choir member Edel.

A return of Lisa L would be a great surprise. Maybe Her and Orla this time around.
I also just want to see former members sing amongst members they have not been together!
Deirdre would be unexpected!!

I know it's unlikely but imagine Lynn and Meav together or Alex with Meav.

Having just watched one of my favorites from CT again this is such a powerful powerhouse performance that I could imagine how if they had for example a reunion one or two number with as many members as possible example: Alex, Lynn, Meav, Lisa L, Eabha, Orla, Chloe, Susan! On something big like this!

It's remarkable how many good songs Brendan Graham has written.

Now you're making me wish for a CW-CT super-tour!

Now this may be wishing too much, but CT did a cruise back in the day. Why not have a Celtic Cruise sponsor by Celtic Collections with CT and CW as musical guest for the shows. 7 night cruise should be long enough to spotlight both groups. Then during the cruise they can have random meet and greets with each member throughout the ship.

Going back to the comments about the actual tour --

The Christmas tours seem to cover a lot of the US.  I'm guessing they do all the travel by bus; air travel is just too erratic.  So, what's a logical time they want to spend on the bus?  6 hours?  At maybe 50 mph, that's 300 or so miles between venues.  In the case of Christmas tour, are they looking for venues of maybe 2000 seats?  Where are these?  Guess is primarily larger cities.

Question. In general do they have M&G for the Christmas shows? (I think the answer is no.)

Follow up question. If they don't have M&G, is there any advantage to buying tickets from PBS?

Last year I bought tickets from PBS. But not sure if that was the right thing to do.
Title: Re: Celtic Woman Symphony Tour 2023

Christmas meet and greets are rare, but they do happen occasionally. I didn't know of any on the most recent Christmas tour. I did have a meet and greet for the finale of the Magic of Christmas tour, which turned out to be Éabha's final show, although I didn't know that at the time. So that was a really special one! Without meet and greet, buying tickets from PBS would mainly be for if you want to donate to PBS. There's no guarantee of getting good seats from them and you likely won't find out what your seats are until a few weeks before the show. I've gotten anything from row 1 to about row 15 from PBS.
Title: Re: Celtic Woman Symphony Tour 2023
Post by: dbbii on May 18, 2023, 09:53:52 AM
Over the years, I've had mixed feelings about PBS tickets.  In the "early" years, you got really good seats.  Part of this may have been due to the fact that not a lot of people knew about CW.  As the years went on, the really good seats (and I'm thinking first couple of rows) were being kept by the venue for their premium members.  You couldn't get a M&G thru the venue, the M&G mostly became a photo op.
Title: Re: Celtic Woman Symphony Tour 2023
Post by: LakersCeltics on May 19, 2023, 12:56:49 AM
Hmm.

Yeah. The more I hear & read about the PBS tickets and M&G, there's a little bit of luck involved. I'm leaning towards just buying the tickets straight from the venue. Assuming I can get good seats on my own.

Thanks for the input.

Well it's June. Currently in the forum calendar, there are ~ 6 concerts in 5 cities in a span of 2-3 weeks. Hopefully a bunch more will be advertised in the coming weeks for the Christmas tour to 'achieve critical mass'...

Fellow Forumites,

This one is not yet listed on the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra (ASO) website, but Georgia PBS is offering 3 options for ticket pairs to the Celtic Woman's Christmas Concert with the ASO, on Friday, December 22, 2023, at the Atlanta Symphony Hall.  Given the date, this may well be the last Concert of the 2023 Christmas Tour. The options (brace yourself because they ain't cheap!) are as follows:

$700 - pair of Pit tickets with Meet & Greet passes (as noted in earlier posts, Meet & Greets are rare in Christmas Tours), pre-Concert Reception, and parking

$550 - pair of Front Orchestra tickets, pre-Concert Reception, and parking

$400 - pair of Front Orchestra tickets and parking

Here's a link to the Georgia PBS website - https://gpbtv.pledgecart.org/home?campaign=5F3B6A9A-D89A-4B06-9987-D27A90D63F07&source=

Despite multiple issues with the GA PBS website, I got the premium package for the Atlanta Christmas tour.  So, probably a couple hundred bucks for a hotel room and another hundred for gas, this becomes my Christmas present to my daughter who's going with me.  Still probably cheaper than the last trip to see the girls at Red Rocks!

If the Minnesota orchestra is not going to get the Christmas tour they’d BETTER squeeze in a Minnesota date like the one in 2019. Mystic Lake where they were then or even State Theatre where I’ve been to two past shows (or Orpheum where they came in 2005, 06, 07, 13 & 17)

Key to a tour is the travel distance.  Take Cedar Falls, IA to Salt Lake City.  According to Google, that's a 17ish hour drive.  So, chances are there is at least one overnight stop on the way, primarily for the bus driver.  I doubt they fly.  Flying in the winter has it's own set of challenges.  And, in this case, it's and 8 hour flight with a connection.

Same thing at the end of the tour.  How do you get from California to South Carolina?
Title: Re: Celtic Woman Symphony Tour 2023
Post by: Tracie on July 01, 2023, 07:42:14 PM
They typically do have a flight or two on the Christmas tour and I'm sure that'll be the case this year the way the schedule is looking.

Cedar Falls, Iowa is only about a 3 hour drive from the Minneapolis/St. Paul metro area, so they could easily do those on back-to-back nights, or it's a fairly quick drive for Minnesota fans who are able to do the drive.

Just a guess, but I think it's because they don't work with the Minnesota Orchestra. I have no clue why that is. There's still hope though that they'll be with some random other orchestra this year like they did in 2019 since they have a lot of open dates right around the Iowa date. Otherwise Twin Cities fans will need to make the 3 hour drive down to Cedar Falls if they're able.

That’s my point. If they’re going to go every year with no Minnesota orchestra the best they can do is have an orchestra like the 2019 one. Do it at state or Orpheum theater.

So maybe they haven't had great attendance in the past in Minnesota?  FWIW, I went to 4 shows last year.  Generally in venues that seat maybe 2500 people.  Attendance was decent, but it wasn't full.  What does it cost to put on a CW show?  How does that compare to a Christmas show with the orchestra?

At some point, it's all about the money.

It's definitely not about attendance in MN - the Celtic Woman shows here sell out and the crowds are outstanding. Two of the best crowds I've ever been in were Minneapolis Ancient Land and Voices of Angels. Roaring from the moment the ladies step on stage and it never stops. They also sold out the Christmas concert here in 2019.

As I keep saying for non holiday shows the attendance record is perfect: only X & Homecoming they skipped out on MN. . We all know why the 15 year tour couldn’t come to MN (I was going to go ;)).
I’d like to see the symphony tour come to the Orpheum (I mostly go to Broadway shows there) or State (I attended Ancient Land & Postcards from Ireland there).

I fired off an email to management complaining about it. I hope they understand my point. I was not happy last year (as I stated then) when I complained -- this year I sent it earlier than last year so hopefully they'll understand (the 2019 MN date was one of if not the last to be added from what I can piece together), last year I sent the email in late August so maybe sending it earlier will get them to understand. For no apparent reason they've skipped Minnesota at the holidays A LOT. We get Trans-Siberian Orchestra every year, Michael W. Smith with or without Amy Grant are pretty frequent (he's coming without Amy Grant this year), Celtic Thunder's two symphony tours have both come to Minnesota (I attended the latter -- my only full group Celtic Thunder show). I especially want the symphony tour to come this year as I am unable to see Celtic Thunder.

There are 3 shows at the Kennedy Center in Washington DC with the National Symphony Orchestra! EPIC!!

The shows are Friday night, Saturday afternoon, and Saturday night of Thanksgiving weekend. Perfect!

This is awesome and Gregg & I will absolutely be going to these shows! How perfect to be on the holiday weekend when we're already off work too!

Tracie,
I was looking at the DC shows and it looks like you can get tickets as part of a package, but you can’t select your seat only the section. Have you found a way to pick your seats?

Hey Bill! No, we didn't find a way to select seats. We did purchase a package though and we selected premium orchestra for our section. We're just hoping that's the front few rows 🤞. Our tickets will be mailed at some point, so we'll just be in suspense until then. We're super excited to go see these amazing ladies at the Kennedy Center!

Our seat assignments are listed in our Kennedy Center account now. They gave us second row dead center for all three shows. Fabulous! That was from us selecting premium orchestra for section.

Update - called the box office and upgraded to front row center for all 3 shows!

Hi Tracy,
I just checked my account. I got row 2 center for the first show too. The other 2 shows I lucked out, probably since it was a single ticket but I got row A  :) :)

Give the box office a call about the first show - Gregg & I were able to move up to row A for all 3 shows and then Mike did that as well. We're all going to have such an amazing time!

Ok so that leaves the entire weekend of the 8th (8th-10th) for a Minnesota date. Come on ladies make it happen. State Theater (where I have attended two past CW shows) is open the 8th and the 10th.

I doubt a MN show would be on the 10th because they're in UT on the 11th. Too far apart in distance. MN could still be the 8th or 9th 🤞

You’ve had 2015, 16 & 19 in Milwaukee. Minnesota we’ve had two (2011, 2019) happen, many misses (2013-18, 22) + one (2012) get cancelled. Just like you I have reasons I can’t go out of state to see the show (uncertainty regarding conditions is the big one). My big fear however is when they do come whether or not I’ll be able to go (I was not able to in 2019 — several years prior to 2019 Minn was missed and I got hopeful then that they wouldn’t wait so long to come back). Every year I’m hopeful and then I am crushed by September.  I partially want one this year because I can’t go see Celtic Thunder. Non holiday has been great however although we’ve not gotten an anniversary tour (15 became postcards from Ireland and 10 didn’t come).

The thing to remember is that with the Christmas tour only being approximately 20 shows and the US being such a large country, it's simply not possible for them to come to every state or to get really close to where every fan lives. For Twin Cities fans, the show in Iowa is a 3 hour drive. That's really darn close considering how big the US is. It's also probably easy for them to rebook with the same orchestras from year to year (Colorado, Utah, Pittsburgh, Atlanta, etc) and unfortunately there's some circumstance that we're unaware of that has them not performing with the Minnesota Orchestra.

Yeah MULTIPLE times I’ve reached out to Minnesota orchestra asking for it and nothing’s happened. Also why don’t they just do what they did in 2019 where they go somewhere that’s not orchestra hall with an orchestra like that one (guessing that one didn’t have a name??)

As Tracie said, chances are if you want to see a Christmas show, be prepared to travel.  I live in Tampa, FL.  On a regular tour, they usually do 6 or 7 shows in Florida.  I've seen two "local" Christmas shows.  Last year, I went to Ohio to see the Christmas Show.  This year I'm going to Atlanta.  I bought the tickets for that before they announced the show in Daytona Beach.  Thought about going to Daytona also, but it's more driving than I want to do, considering I go to Atlanta a couple days later.  Plus, Atlanta has a M&G!!

I am so looking forward to Mairead C singing Auld Lang Syne. She hits the high note in the middle of the song in the Magic of Christmas version (not so much at the end of the song). So good!!!

The reason I've never travelled is the risk of bad weather (perhaps extended travel time getting to/from the city I'd be going to). When the Magic of Christmas tour came close I was busy the night of so couldn't go.

I know exactly what you both mean. I was 'ok' with Auld Lang Syne before I heard Lisa Lambe sing it. Then it became one of my favorite holiday songs. I love the version on Magic of Christmas too.

PS. If anyone needs a coupon code for the California shows, send me a PM / DM. It's valid this week only.

There's been a lot of talk on here about Minnesota Christmas shows. On Friday night before the filming, we met and talked with the man who handles Celtic Woman's tour bookings. I asked him why no Minnesota Orchestra on the Christmas tours. His response was "no comment". Interesting, and as I have suspected for quite some time, there's some unknown thing going on that has them not perform with the Minnesota Orchestra. Thought you all would be interested in that little tidbit.

He also said that Red Rocks is incredibly difficult to book and it sounds unlikely for there to be a Red Rocks show next year. Darn, we thought that was likely for the 20th Anniversary!

Oh wow! As a behind the scenes geek myself, I would have tons of questions for him. Especially how the process works on booking venues and what is usually required when building the contract.

If they can’t do Minnesota orchestra then the least they could do is do what they did in 2019 where they go to mystic lake (or even Orpheum Theatre) and get an orchestra together. I saw The Who at Xcel Energy Center in 2019 with orchestra (which was also assembled) and I remember hearing that the orchestra hadn’t rehearsed until the day of the show. Or Stringenius whom I saw perform with Andrea Bocelli would be good with the ladies.

@CWazyTom : I've been checking tickets off & on for fun, just to see how quickly seats are selling. The weirdest thing is that face value prices have gone up twice this week. Like all Orchestra seats at least. Yes, I'm looking directly at the venue site. Maybe it's common now? IDK.  ???

I've gotten tickets for Costa Mesa now as well - I have Friday night front row and Saturday night front row of one of the balcony tiers. I like seeing one show per tour from the balcony from a different perspective and the Saturday show only had front row way off to the edges, so there's my balcony show for this tour!

Oh this is getting to be more fun by the minute! I'll send you a PM later.

I have front row tickets one day. And I'm holding out for the microscopic chance there is a M&G package with PBS for another day. Remember I was the one asking about how common / uncommon Christmas M&G are. On top of that, the PBS station that covers this venue didn't even have a M&G for Postcards last year. All that to say, slim chance. (I went to the Postcards M&G covered by a 2nd PBS station.)

I know what you mean about front row balcony. I have front row balcony for Jenny Oaks Baker / Alex Sharpe the following week. And the VIP M&G.

Again, I'll send you a PM later. ;)

My gut says that CW has typically hit Red Rocks every  other year.  Same thing with RCMH.  Both of those are fairly big venues from a seating capacity, so maybe they have concerns about how many people would attend.  We all know everything costs more, especially after COVID.  Are people going to shows of any kind less than they were several years ago?

I'd spend the money to go to either one without a second thought, but I also realize a lot of people can't do that.
Title: Re: Celtic Woman Symphony Tour 2023

They seem to be using smaller venues in general, at least where I live. Even at the multi-theater venue where they're coming for Christmas here, they used to use the "large" theater (capacity = 3000). But now they are using the "medium" theater (capacity < 2000). In their prime, they used theaters in L.A. with seating capacity of 6000 or more.

At the 20th Anniversary filming, in the lobby before the show, a few of us talked to the man who books Celtic Woman tours. It was a really interesting conversation and included talking about Red Rocks specifically. He said Red Rocks is an incredibly difficult venue to book. I have also been told that venues book two years in advance (and I wouldn't be surprised if Red Rocks was even longer). So it's not for lack of trying if it doesn't get onto the schedule for next year.
