Title: Irish Songs and Their Meaning

Our first song of this series, An Mhaighdean Mhara (pronounced something like "Awn WHY-gee-an WHAR-a" or "Awn my-dee-an maura" depending on the dialect), means The Mermaid. I've known that for a while as a result of Méav's cover of the song. But I never bothered diving deeper into the meaning of the song.

But Rebecca Winckworth came along yesterday to provide some enlightenment as well as beautiful music. Here's Rebecca explaining the story behind the song and then performing it, accompanied by lovely piano backing:
