General Discussion / Original vs. Rearrangement
« on: July 22, 2021, 05:36:17 AM »
These Celtic Woman songs have had some rearrangements over the years:
• Orinoco Flow (originally from Celtic Woman, rearranged for Ancient Land)
• She Moved Through the Fair (originally from Celtic Woman, rearranged for Voices of Angels)
• Walk Beside Me (originally from Destiny, rearranged for Voices of Angels)
• Newgrange (originally from A New Journey, rearranged for Ancient Land)
• Over the Rainbow (originally from A New Journey, rearranged for Ancient Land)
• O, America! (originally from Songs from the Heart, rearranged for Voices of Angels)

For each of these songs, which do you prefer, the original or rearrangement, and why?

My opinions:
• Orinoco Flow: Original. The rearrangement is great, especially since they got very creative with the intro and chorus etc., but it just lacks the full orchestral power of the original which I loved.
• She Moved Through the Fair: Original. Absolutely no offence to the rearrangement (especially Susan's dancing during live performances), which is also amazing, but this sounded much more enchanting and fairytale-esque.
• Walk Beside Me: Rearrangement. This is one of my favourite "love songs" to come from the group, and the way they rearranged it for Voices of Angels with the full orchestra and the uilleann pipe solo is absolutely gorgeous (no offence to the original, though).
• Newgrange: Rearrangement. In my opinion, Mairéad C.'s operatic voice at the beginning is absolutely stunning (no offence to Órla, though)!
• Over the Rainbow: Original. Mairéad C. and Megan did good, especially with their little "ooh"s in the rearrangement, but acapella is much more ethereal and the original greatly represents that.
• O, America!: Original. Unfortunately I haven't ever heard the rearrangement yet...  :'(

Fun and Games / What does it mean in English?
« on: July 19, 2021, 04:30:48 PM »
Can you translate these foreign-language-sung verses and song titles from Celtic Woman into English?

Song #1: Níl Sé'n Lá
Chuaigh mé isteach i dteach aréir
Is d'iarr mé cairde ar mhnaoi an leanna
Is é dúirt sí liom "Ní bhfaighidh tú deor
Buail an bóthar is gabh abhaile"

Song #2: Bean Pháidín
'Sé'n trua ghéar nach mise, nach mise
'Sé'n trua ghéar nach mise bean Pháidín
'Sé'n trua ghéar nach mise, nach mise
'S an bhean atá aige bheith caillte
Rachainn go Gallaí' go Gallaí'
Is rachainn go Gallaí' le Pháidín
Rachainn go Gallaí' go Gallaí'
Is thiocfainn abhaile sa mbád leis

Song #3: Téir Abhaile Riú (Voices of Angels version)
Tá do mharghadh, níl mo mhargadh
Tá do mharghadh déanta
Níl mo mhargadh, tá do mhargadh
Níl mo mhargadh déanta
Níl mo mhargadh, tá do mharghadh
Níl mo mhargadh déanta
Tá do mhargadh, níl mo mhargadh
Tá do mharghadh déanta

Song #4: Wenn Du in Meinen Träumen
Wenn du in meinen Träumen bei mir bist
Träum' ich von jenen Stunden die man nie mehr vergisst
Denn nur in meinen Träumen fühle ich
Du bist Sinn meines Lebens, was wär' ich ohne dich

Song #5: Non C'è Più
Onda blu, dove vai, non lo chiedero
Cio che tu perderai, non lo cerchero
Cerchi di sfociare, corri sempre giu
Quando trov il mare, fiume non c'è più

Song #6: Vivaldi's Rain (title doesn't need a translation)
Signore guidami, e dimmi cosa fare
Ho vista l'amore della mia vita, e lui ha vista me

Song #7: Nella Fantasia
Nella fantasia io vedo un mondo giusto
Li tutti vivono in pace e in onesta
Io sogno d'anime che sono sempre libere
Come le nuvole che volano
Pien' d'umanita in fondo all'anima

Song #8: Mna ná hÉireann
Tá bean in Éirinn a bhronnfadh séad dom 's mo sháith le n-ól
'S tá bean in Éirinn ba bhinne léithe mo ráfla ceoil ná seinm téad
Tá bean in Éirinn, 's níorbh fhearr léi beo
Mise ag léimneach nó leagtha I gcré is mo thárr faoi fhód

Song #9: Sive / Sadhbh Ní Bhruinnealaigh (title doesn't need a translation since the title is a person's name)
Máistir báid mhóir mé a' gabháil ród na Gaillimhe
D'fhliuchfainn naoi bhfód is ní thóigfinn aon fharraige
Óró a Shadhbh Ní Bhruinnealaigh
Tabhair dom do láimhín, éalaigh is imigh liom

Song #10: 'Sí do Mhaimeo Í
'Sí do mhaimeo í, 'sí do mhaimeo í
'Sí do mhaimeo í cailleach an airgid
'Sí do mhaimeo í ó Bhail' Iorrais Mhóir í
'S chuir-feadh sí cóistí 'r bhóithre Chois Fharraige

Have fun!

9. Wexford Carol (Méav)
10. Christmas Pipes (all)
11. O Holy Night (all)
12. Panis Angelicus (Chloë)
13. Green the Whole Year 'Round (Lisa)
14. Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas (all)
15. Don Oíche Úd i mBeithil (That Night in Bethlehem) (Chloë, Méav and Máiréad with Órla on harp)
16. O Come All Ye Faithful (all)
17. Let it Snow! (all)

52
Does anybody know the lyrics to the second verse of The Sky and the Dawn and the Sun (e.g. the version performed during the A New Journey, Emerald and Decade tours)? I've been looking on the internet but I've had no luck so far  :(

53
A bit early to ask, but...
If Celtic Woman ever release another Christmas-themed album or concert special in the future, what new songs or re-arrangements should they perform?

My ideas for new songs include:
• Believe (originally by Josh Groban and featured in the 2004 film The Polar Express)
• Journey of the Angels (originally by Enya)
• Let it Go (originally by Idina Menzel and featured in the 2013 Disney film Frozen)
• Soillse na Nollag (The Lights of Christmas) (a traditional Irish carol)
• The First Day (a traditional Irish hymn of a Christmas nature with a famous version by Anúna)
• Somewhere a Star Shines for Everyone (originally by Charlotte Church and featured in the 1998 film version of Raymond Briggs' The Bear)

As for re-arrangements that Gavin Murphy has done but not put on a studio album/hasn't yet done:
• O Come All Ye Faithful
• In the Bleak Midwinter
• The First Noël
• Walking in the Air
• Panis Angelicus
• Don Oíche Úd i mBeithil (That Night in Bethlehem)
• Hark! The Herald Angels Sing
• We Three Kings (with the uilleann pipes instead of the Highland pipes)
• Away in a Manger
• It Came Upon the Midnight Clear

Believe / Tour Setlists and Notes (2012-2013)
« on: July 13, 2021, 06:51:30 AM »
This was the setlist used for the entirety of the 2012 tour. Performing on the tour were Chloë, Máiréad N., Lisa L. and Susan (standing in for Lisa K. who was on maternity leave).

Act 1:
1. Awakening (all)
2. Dúlamán (Lisa)
3. Nocturne (Chloë and Máiréad)
4. The Foxhunter (Máiréad)
5. Sailing (all)
6. A Woman's Heart (Chloë, Lisa and Susan)
7. Follow On (Susan)
The New Ground
8. Téir Abhaile Riú (all)
9. Granuaile's Dance (Máiréad)
10. Danny Boy (Chloë, Lisa and Susan)
11. Mo Ghile Mear (all)

Act 2:
1. Amazing Grace (Chloë, Lisa and Susan)
2. A Spaceman Came Travelling (Lisa)
3. Songs from the Heart (Walking the Night / The World Falls Away) [Chloë, Lisa and Susan]
4. The Water is Wide (Susan and Máiréad)
Bodhrán solo
5. Green Grow the Rushes (Chloë and Susan)
6. A Tribute to Broadway (I Dreamed a Dream / Circle of Life) [Chloë, Lisa and Susan]
7. Ave Maria (Chloë)
8. You'll Never Walk Alone (all)
9. Mńa na hÉireann (Máiréad)
10. The Parting Glass (all)
11. Mo Ghile Mear (reprise) [all]

Notes to take:
• The intro to Sailing was played on the whistle
• Téir Abhaile Riú was performed with the comic "lilting" intro
• Danny Boy was performed in an acoustic-orchestral form
• Chloë sang an acoustic solo version of Green Grow the Rushes as part of a fun little singing game before the actual song was performed itself, and you can watch a YouTube recording of it from Fairfax, VA here (the bodhrán solo that was played beforehand is also included): https://youtu.be/QJp4ljUGckw
• The reprise of Mo Ghile Mear was extended to include band member and dancer solos

The 2013 tour setlist would have had lots of differences due to the fact that Chloë had left the group, Mairéad C. was now a member of CW and the Emerald - Musical Gems concert special had already been filmed. Please do feel free to correct any wrongdoings (which I assume there is a lot of).

Act 1:
1. Awakening (all)
2. Dúlamán (Lisa)
3. Caledonia (Susan)
4. Scarlet Ribbons (For Her Hair) (Mairéad C.)
5. Orinoco Flow (Mairéad C., Lisa and Susan)
6. Téir Abhaile Riú (all)
7. Granuaile's Dance (Máiréad)
8. Danny Boy (all)
9. Mo Ghile Mear (all)

Act 2:
1. Amazing Grace (Mairéad C., Lisa and Susan)
2. She Moved Through the Fair (Mairéad C.)
3. Bridge Over Troubled Water (Lisa)
Bodhrán/percussion solo with dancers
4. Níl Sé'n Lá (all)
5. Shenandoah / The Contradiction (Máiréad)
6. The Voice (Susan and Máiréad)
7. You Raise Me Up (all)
8. The Parting Glass (all)
9. Mo Ghile Mear (reprise) [all]

Celtic Woman have already covered a few songs from the Disney renaissance on some of their studio albums over the years:

• Someday from The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1996) (Eternal's version, covered by Chloë on the original Celtic Woman album)
• Beyond the Sea from Finding Nemo (2003) (covered by the original cast and Hayley on A New Journey)
• You'll Be in My Heart from Tarzan (1999) (end title version, covered by Alex on Songs from the Heart)
• Circle of Life from The Lion King (1994) (covered by Chloë, Lisa K. and Lisa L. as part of the "A Tribute to Broadway" set exclusive to the Believe tour)
• Stay Awake from Mary Poppins (1964) (covered by Chloë, Lynn and Máiréad N. on Lullaby)
• When You Wish Upon a Star from Pinocchio (1940) (covered by Lisa K. and Máiréad N. on Lullaby)
• Baby Mine from Dumbo (1942) (covered by Chloë on Lullaby)

I have a question: what Disney songs have Celtic Woman not yet covered but you would like to see them do in the future?
Some of my ideas include:

• Let it Go from Frozen (2013)
• Into the Open Air from Brave (2012) (Tara actually did a little violin/harp cover of another song from the film which you can watch here: https://www.facebook.com/taramcneillmusic/videos/i-often-get-told-i-look-like-merida-from-brave-i-wonder-why-but-if-you-know-me-a/686946495092074/?extid=SEO----)
• Colors of the Wind from Pocahontas (1995)
• Candle on the Water from Pete's Dragon (1977)
• Can You Feel the Love Tonight? or Endless Night from The Lion King (1994) (keep in mind that the latter is from the musical)
• God Help the Outcasts from The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1996)
• Reflection from Mulan (1998)
• When She Loved Me from Toy Story 2 (1999)
• We Are One or Love Will Find a Way from The Lion King II: Simba's Pride (1998)

Let me know your ideas while you can!

While browsing on YouTube I found this extremely rarely-seen performance of You Raise Me Up by Chloë, Órla, Máiréad, Lynn and Alex, recorded for a Japanese television special (no info as to what it was sadly) back in 2008 (no date unfortunately but I can assume it would've been around the New Year/January when it was recorded as the Japanese leg of the A New Journey tour had finished, Méav had just left the group, and Lisa K. was on maternity leave).

Lynn and Alex, in particular, really get their moment to shine here when it comes to them singing Méav and Lisa's parts. I do believe that this was one of their first proper performances with Celtic Woman and they SMASHED it! Japan is a country with cultures I greatly admire so the fact that Celtic Woman have some fans down there makes me pretty happy.

Other Musicians / Cécile Corbel – Kari-gurashi
« on: July 11, 2021, 04:40:51 PM »
One artist worth listening to if you like Celtic Woman is the fantastic Cécile Corbel. She is a French and Breton singer, harpist (just like Órla) and composer who has released five albums of original music in the past and most famously worked for Japanese animation company Studio Ghibli as a composer for its 2010 film, The Secret World of Arrietty.

She released an album of music from and inspired by the film ahead of its original Japanese release called Kari-gurashi (借りぐらし; Borrowing) which you can have a listen to here: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_naDXQmH78frWC_QRziTySNwsN5RJlG3l8

The film itself is also available to watch on HBO Max (US and Canada only) and Netflix (some other countries excluding the US and Canada).

Netflix (stay wary if you want to watch it here in English, as there are two different dubs in the language depending on your home region, also the link provided may go to the UK site. The dub on Netflix regardless is really good, and Ireland's very own Saoirse Ronan plays Arrietty here): https://www.netflix.com/gb/title/70216227?s=a&trkid=13747225&t=more&vlang=en

Other Musicians / Celtic Thunder – My Land
« on: July 11, 2021, 04:52:22 AM »
If you enjoyed Celtic Woman's cover of My Land then I personally think you'll enjoy Celtic Thunder's as well. Their version interestingly contains a third verse that does not appear on Celtic Woman's version of the song 😁

Here are some YouTube links so you can compare them to one another:
