Celtic Woman / Celtic Woman: FAQ

Celtic Woman FAQ

Q: Who are the current members of the group?

Mairéad Carlin
Tara McNeill
Muirgen O'Mahony
Emma Warren

Note: Member list current as of July 6, 2023

Q: When did Celtic Woman start?

The very first Celtic Woman concert was at The Helix, in Dublin, Ireland on September 15, 2004. It was supposed to be a one night show, but the PBS special and album became so popular, the group started touring. However, the group had actually recorded their first album several months before their first concert. Chloë was still 14 when they recorded the album, so it was recorded on or before June 9, 2004.

On June 9, 2020, Máiréad Nesbitt mentioned that June 9, 2004 might be the actual anniversary of Celtic Woman. However, this is unconfirmed. Further sources are needed to verify this.

Q: Who is the red headed lady on the Celtic Woman album covers? Was she in the group?

She is a French model. She is supposed to represent the idealized Celtic wwoman. Her red hair was added in with Photoshop. Celtic Woman's Irish label, Celtic Collections, had the photos of her from a previous photo shoot and she, in fact, appeared on a previous compilation for the company. Interestingly enough, the photo shoot was so long ago that no one even remembers her name. She was never in the group.

Q: Do the girls lip sync?

No.

Q: How do I get Meet & Greet tickets?

Meet & Greets (M&G) are a special arrangement between Celtic Woman and the local PBS and therefore tickets are typically only available through that PBS. Usually the M&G tickets and concert tickets are sold together during the PBS's pledge drive. There are only a limited number of M&G tickets available and they're sold on a first come first served basis. In some rare cases, a venue will offer Meet and Greet tickets and on the Symphony tours, sometimes the symphony will offer a limited number of Meet and Greet passes to regular ticketholders.

Q: What should I wear to the concert? What about the Meet & Greet?

It varies. Concert-goers wear everything from suits to gowns to jeans and t-shirts at CW concerts. People generally dress up a little for a Meet and Greet photo, though this is not required and many people dress casually.

Q: My favorite Celtic Woman is no longer with the group. Will I ever see them again?

Group members rarely return to the group full time after they have taken a break from the group (Méav and Lisa Kelly did for a while but eventually left to be with their families). Some members have returned temporarily (Alex, Lynn, Méav, and Susan) to fill in for other members. Chloë recently returned to the group as a special guest on the abbreviated 2020 Celebration tour after a long hiatus.

Many members that have left group go on to pursue a solo career. Chloë and Máiréad Nesbitt performed quite frequently after departing. However, most of the performers have performed less frequently (a few times a year) after leaving. Some offer Meet and Greets at their solo shows. It's best to follow each performer you're interested in on social media so you can stay up to date on what they're doing. We post information about their solo shows on the forum as we become aware of them.

Q: Is Celtic Woman recording a new album / DVD in 2023?

Yes. The 20th Anniversary special is being recorded at The Helix in Dublin, Ireland on August 25, 2023. It will probably start airing on PBS on Thanksgiving weekend in the US.

CaraNua's album Celtic Dreaming has begun releasing on digital platforms!

I listened to the whole album on Spotify while I wait for my signed copy to arrive in the mail.

Track Listing:

1. The Voice
2. The Prayer (Let Your Arms Enfold Us)
3. Dulaman
4. Baby Mine
5. The Rocky Road to Dublin
6. Danny Boy
7. Magic Enfolds
8. Daughters of Danu
9. 900 Years - Children of Lir
10. Ave Maria
11. Banshee Lullaby
12. Here's to the Living (The Parting Glass)

There are 4 tracks from the Evermore Park soundtracks:
- Magic Enfolds
- Daughters of Danu
- 900 Years - Children of Lir
- Banshee Lullaby

Thoughts:

Most of the songs are soft, soothing tunes. Most of the tracks have an acoustic sound, an excellent choice, I thought, since it allows their voices to remain the focus and allows the listener to fully appreciate the pristine vocal harmony.

Lynn did all the vocal arrangements and my goodness are they ever intricate! One of the strengths of Celtic Woman tracks are their consumability: they're very easy to listen to. Celtic Dreaming, on the other hand, thrives in its crystal clarity and sophistication.

Most of the vocal arrangements have a jazzy quality to them.

CaraNua have taken songs we're quite familiar with and made them totally unique to their style. The tracks all have a very fresh sound. There are some surprises too. The Parting Glass is definitely not what you're expecting. ;)

My favourite track is probably Daughters of Danu. Alex wrote that one and it's pretty epic!

There wasn't a single track on the album I didn't like. Lynn's arrangements are phenomenal!

If you've listened to Jason Tonioli's Favorite Hymns album, the vocal arrangements have similar characteristics, but in my opinion, the design of the harmony is even fancier in Celtic Dreaming. The sound and sophistication is astonishing! Some might find Favorite Hymns easier to listen to, depending on your taste in music, but Celtic Dreaming feels more intellectually stimulating.

This album succeeds in being unique, intriguing and gorgeous.

I hope you all enjoy it too!

Caranua / CaraNua Christmas Songs
« on: October 15, 2019, 06:14:29 PM »
CaraNua mentioned during their live stream that they may release some Christmas songs in time for the holidays. They're already recorded, I guess it's just a matter of getting them mixed, mastered, and licensed in time for Christmas.

Can we guess the album/EP name?

"Celtic Christmas"
"Christmas with CaraNua"
"A CaraNua Christmas"
"We Wish You A CaraNua Christmas"
"I'm Celtic Dreaming of a White Christmas"

Any fun guesses?

Chloe Agnew / Around the Sound podcast (Episode 24) featuring Chloë
« on: October 11, 2019, 07:51:38 PM »
Chloë recorded this podcast/interview a week or so before she launched her fundraising campaign on Indiegogo:

https://soundcloud.com/aroundthesoundpodcast/ats-presents-chloe-agnew-episode-24

It's long (about 1 hour 19 minutes), but there is a lot of really interesting information.

She has some great insights and quotes in there too. Plus you get to hear two of her songs from The Thing About You.

There are multiple moments of mind blowing news in there too. I won't spoil all the surprises for you though. ;)

I don't listen to too many podcasts, but this is one of my 2 favourite podcast episodes. This was good!

Disclaimer: There is a bit of foul language from time to time, so if you're sensitive to that sort of thing, be mindful of that. But I wouldn't say there's a lot of it, just some.

Chloe Agnew / Planet Peek-A-Boo

Chloë is one of the voices in an animated kids series called Planet Peek-A-Boo that's expected to be available within the next year!

I think my nephew will need to be introduced to this series. I'll not have this kid growing up with Chloë or Celtic Woman in his life. Not on my watch.

Ancient Land / Ancient Land DVD Recording Anniversary!
« on: September 12, 2019, 11:09:01 PM »
One year ago today was the first night of the Celtic Woman: Ancient Land taping at Johnstown Castle in Wexford!

It seems hard to believe it's already been a year, yet so much has happened since then, it also seems long ago.

Here are some things I remember most...

The planning for my first trip to Ireland on relatively short notice was frantic and a bit exhausting, but things worked out very well. The weather while I was in Ireland was incredible! Only a day or two of rain the entire trip (although one of those rainy days destroyed my old phone). I saw a lot of awesome things while I was in Ireland: Powerscourt, The Guinness Store House, Trinity College, The Cliffs of Moher, The Giant's Causeway, Edel Murphy in Riverdance, Lisa Lambe in Jimmy's Hall ... but as you may have guessed, Celtic Woman at Johnstown Castle was the highlight of the trip.

I was able to sleep for almost the entire flight to Ireland, so I managed to experience practically no jet lag!

I packed in so much sightseeing before the DVD recording that I was a bit worn out by the DVD recording. I got dropped off at the back entrance so it was a bit of a walk to the entrance, where a line had already formed hours before they started letting people in. Standing in line I got to meet a lot of awesome forum friends for the first time! Tracie, I will always remember the first time you came up to me all excited and recognized me. :D

The anticipation was crazy as we stood in line in front of the castle, knowing we were hours away from a show we had probably dreamed of but never thought we would actually be part of.

The first night of DVD recording was pretty cold, though not as cold and foggy as night #2. I got to sit in the second row to stage right (first row stage right on night #2). I had a great view of the stage. The castle was lit up beautifully. The show was a little late getting started as people had to be re-arranged in the bleachers before they started the show, but it was worth every moment of the wait!

I was excited out of my mind when Tara came out onto that stage and the singers followed, Megan for the first time as a member of Celtic Woman! Megan was a bit nervous, but who wouldn't be? She powered through it though and she was an amazing presence on stage!

The whole experience was incredible!

The day of the second show, a group of us went to the castle early in the afternoon to walk around the gorgeous castle grounds before getting in line. We saw PBS recording some footage for pledge segments, but we didn't find out until later that Celtic Woman (including Meav) had been behind the castle doing their interviews and chatting with fans a few hours before we arrived. We got to watch the girls doing sound check from the line. They ran cameras up and down the line and got some volunteers to do interviews. In the excitement of the moment, I volunteered. Fortunately, those interviews never aired, since I've never been so disappointed in my communication skills. That was my moment to express how much Celtic Woman meant to me and I couldn't say anything coherent. I'll have to have something prepared in advance if there's a next time.

Before the show on night #2, I got to meet Susan again, who was all bundled up in the crowd. I also got to meet Glenn, Ronan, and Anto. Meav was hiding somewhere in the crowd too, but I unfortunately didn't spot her while I was there.

The second night was damp, foggy and really chilly, but thankfully there was no rain during either show. The stage had to be mopped after every few songs because of all the moisture, but it was still pretty "slippy." Mairead was hilarous between songs. I'm still waiting for Celtic Woman On Ice to be announced though. ;)

We stuck around after the show both nights, but didn't get to meet any of the lead performers post-show. We saw the girls come back out of the castle to take some photos with friends and family. Tara saw us watching and waved at us from a distance (yeah, the not-so-subtle Susan reference there was fully intended).

I actually got pretty sick the morning after the second show: probably a combination of the crazy mist from the night before and the energy crash after the most amazing concert experience ever but I still got to see a few more things in Carlow and Kilkenny before flying back home from the most treasured adventure of my life.

What are some of your favorite memories from the Celtic Woman: Ancient Land DVD recording and your time in Ireland?
