The Stage and The Opening

The show opened with curtains covering the stage, maintaining the suspense of opening night.

The tour started with Homecoming Lament. The curtains were still closed. Lights from behind the stage cast enlarged shadows on the curtains.

The curtains dropped and the lights came up, revealing all 4 ladies on stage at the top of the stairs performing the Voices of Angels arrangement of Mo Ghile Mear.

The centerpiece at the back of the stage was a Celtic-stylized painted white white ring, reminiscent of both the the first Celtic Woman show and the triskele floor pattern in Ancient Land. During the show, there were images projected within the ring (more on that later).

To me, the big stylized ring, painted in plain white on a black background, seemed a little tacky. But it ended up working pretty well during the show.

The back centerpiece was flanked by curtains, reminiscent of Emerald.

The stage featured a single flight of stairs in the middle, flanked by two raised percussion platforms, and the band at the foot of the platforms. The drums had the beautiful Celebration tour logo on the front.

We were sitting in the first row behind the pit. But that ended up being quite far away from the stage, since there was a wide isle Isle the back of the pit and the first row of orchestra seating.

Dresses

The opening dresses were the same ones the ladies wore in their Celebration tour promotional photos.

Tara came out in a bright blue dress to kick of the Ceili portion of the 1st act. After The Kesh Inn, the the other ladies joined her on stage wearing bright colors of their own. Chloë's dress was sky blue, Mairéad wore a dark turquoise. Megan wore a bright aqua. Tara wore a shade of blue a little lighter than Chloë's.

The dresses in the 2nd act were all shades of purple and maroon. Mairead's was the darkest shade of purple.

The Show

This might be the best arranged set list I've ever heard on a Celtic Woman tour!

Mo Ghile Mear set the tone for the show with lots of energy and backed by thunderous percussion.

After a rousing edition of Follow Me, Mairéad officially welcomed Chloë back to Celtic Woman!

Chloë's opening solo was Isle of Hope, a song she performes frequently on her solo tours. Chloë encouraged the audience to sing along for the final chorus. There was a decent amount of audience participation.

Chloë seemed to be having a LOT of fun on stage throughout. After years of insisting she had no desire to return to the group, she seemed to be absolutely thrilled to be back.

I wasn't sure if she would be able to see me in the row behind the pit, since it was pretty far back from the stage. But I guess I was in a decently lit area, since she apparently noticed me and waved / pointed at me a few times during the show.

There weren't too many technical hiccups during the show, in spite of it being the opening show of the tour. There were very few obvious lighting miscues. There were a few times the girls' mics weren't turned on soon enough when they started talking and the mice came on part way through what they were saying. The most glaring issue was during Dulaman. At several times during the song, there was a deep, loud hum of feedback coming over the speakers. Mairéad definitely noticed it, but she did a fantastic job maintaining her composure.

During Dulaman, Mairéad took flight down the stairs with the aid of two of the choir members / dancers.

Isle of Innisfree was a duet sung by Mairéad and with Tara on harp. This was the loveliest arrangement of the song I've ever heard.

During the Megan/Chloë duet part in Amazing Grace, one of them was missing their notes and the harmony was a little off. They recovered quickly though and the rest of the song was really well done.

Chloë sang When You Believe with as much heart as ever. While she did a fantastic job, there's really no comparisson to her singing that song with an orchestra behind her.

Mairéad's performance of Nella Fantasia was epic! She sang with every bit as much heart as Chloë. She delivered on her big "opera voice" notes. This was a beautiful jaw dropper.

That was a tough act to follow, but Megan came out on stage and performed an astonishing version of The Voice. Megan channeled Susan at times as she moved about the stage and she absolutely owned that song vocally. It was another jaw dropper.

Just when I thought it couldn't get any better, all three singers came out on stage to sing a 3-part harmony of May It Be. That was the first Celtic Woman song I listened to in its entirety and fittingly, that night in Lakeland, it became my favourite arrangement of the song and my favourite song ever! The harmony was immaculate and gorgeous beyond comparisson. The sound was ethereal,  enchanting and immensely soothing, My jaw was open the whole time. Chloë actually noticed from the stage and started smiling, but she held it together. Near the end of the song the choir came out on stage with artificial candles. It was breathtaking! This one NEEDS to appear on an album and DVD. It was soooo amazing!

I wasn't sure how this arrangement of Danny Boy would sound without Éabha, but it sounded fantastic! While Éabha had supplied depth to the sound, Chloë added a new dimension with strong mid-tone vibrato. It worked extremely well!

The crowd to that point had been average, with Gregg, Tracie, and I doing most of the in-song clapping. The crowd got really into The Enchanted Way though.

I haven't been the biggest fan of some of the Celtic Woman arrangemnts of You Raise Me Up over the years. It certainly was never at the top of my favourites list. That all changed in Lakeland. As the girls dazzled us with their voices, a beautiful tribute video played within the stylized ring at the back of the stage. The video featured past and present members of Celtic Woman and memorable photos over the group's first 15 years. That was an overwhelmingly emotional part of the show and was perhaps my favourite moment at a Celtic Woman concert.

Celtic Woman closed out the opening show of the tour with The Parting Glass. The ovations after the You Raise Me Up and The Parting Glass were sustained and impressive. The girls almost got choked up at our reaction.

Ancient Land was a tough act to follow. But the first show of the Celebration tour, the first Celtic Woman show I've ever seen without Éabha, somehow managed to top it. There were multiple 10-bell jaw dropper in the show and every song was more amazing than I could have expected.

I'm really glad I get to see this tour up to 13 more times!

Post-Show

Gregg, Tracie and I waited for a while between the stage door and the busses. We saw some band and choir members, but security eventually told us the girls were already at their hotel, which was connected to the venue. But fortunately we would have a lot more chances to meet them on the tour, and the stage encounter after the very next show was EPIC!

Celtic Woman / New music coming (2020)?
« on: February 05, 2020, 05:06:08 PM »
Chloë posted an Instagram picture of her shadow at Windmill Lane recording studios today. This in the midst of rehearsals for the Celebration Tour. That could be a clue that Celtic Woman is recording new music!

That would be interesting, recording with Chloë when she's most likely only back with the group until the end of the tour on June 7th?

BTS of course finished at the top of the chart. BTS was #2 on the overall (not just World) top artists group chart.  :o

As Chloë re-joins the group, our wonderful soloist Éabha McMahon will be taking leave from us to pursue her own projects. Éabha is extremely excited about her plans and will be keeping you all posted through social media channels and Celtic Woman. We pay our highest tribute to Éabha, who joined us in 2015 for our Destiny Special at the Mansion House in Dublin. Éabha was the first ever Sean Nós singer in the group and has been an incredibly dynamic and singular performer in the show.

We wish Éabha every success with her solo projects and look forward to sharing the stage with her again along our Celtic Woman journey.

Roisin Dempsey (CW choir)

Caranua / A Celtic Christmas (album)
« on: January 01, 2020, 11:47:49 PM »
So if you're reading this and your name's not Tracie, you may be wondering what this is...because as far as I know CaraNua didn't tell anyone about it. Also, I didn't get notified by any of the platforms on which I subscribe to CaraNua (Spotify, YouTube, PlayMusic, etc.).

But apparently CaraNua released a digital album called A Celtic Christmas December 25, 2019.

Thanks to Matt for telling Gregg and Tracie, who told me.

Is it too early to listen to Christmas music on January 1, because I listened tonight.

It's sooooo gorgeous! The arrangements are enchanting, the sound is immensely soothing, and the vocal harmonies are hauntingly beautiful.

Track list:

1. Shooting Star
2. All Through the Night
3. CaraNua Carol of the Bells
4. O Holy Night
5. Aurora
6. A New Dawn
7. Winter Angels of Evermore
8. I Saw Three Ships
9. What Child Is This
10. Baby Jesu Joy
11. Winter Magic Enfolds

Thoughts:

I may add more after work tomorrow when I listen to the album again.

This is as gorgeous as everything we've come to expect from CaraNua. Crystal clear and gorgeous harmony.

Shooting Star sounds like an original song, is performed in English and I think David might have heard it while he was at Evermore Park. Alex is the lead singer in this song.

All Through the Night is similar (possibly identical) to CaraNua's previous release of the song as a single and on their Celtic Dreaming album. I'll have to go back and listen to the other version to compare. It's immensely soothing.

CaraNua Carol of the Bells is sung in Irish. The CaraNua arrangement manages to turn what is normally a frantic-paced song into a soothing one. It's really quite remarkable how they made this sound so intricate and beautiful.

O Holy Night is another song CaraNua approached totally differently than one might expect. They hum the entire song and I don't know that I've ever heard such a unique and enchanting arrangement of the song.

Aurora is an original song I think. I've never heard heard it before. I'm pretty sure it was written for the Aurora soundtrack at Evermore Park. It's in English, the voices are angelic, and the sound is sublime. Lynn is the lead singer in this one.

A New Dawn is also probably an original song for the Evermore Park soundtrack. It's performed in English and is deeply soothing. The profound resonance Alex gets out of some of the notes in this song is incredible! An absolutely enchanting song!

Winter Angels of Evermore is a re-arrangement of "Angels of Evermore" from "Evermore Park, Vol. 1: Soundtrack of Magical Lore." Like the songs that preceded it on the album, it is hauntingly lovely. I don't have the capacity to describe how beautiful all these tracks are. You'll just have to listen.

I Saw Three Ships is the first song on the album that has a skip in its step. It's performed softly, but it's arranged like an Irish jig, the tempo carried by the tin whistle and some light percussion. The harmony, as in all the songs on the album, is lovely.

What Child Is This starts out like a light snowfall as a soft instrumental. Then CaraNua adds gentle, intricate humming to the melody.

Baby Jesu Joy is performed as soft, soothing humming.

Winter Magic Enfolds is a re-arranged and extended version of "Magic Enfolds" from "Evermore Park, Vol. 1: Soundtrack of Magical Lore" and "Celtic Dreaming." The third quarter of the song becomes really creepy. If I heard that in a dark hallway at night, I'd be intrigued, but also scared out of my mind! That was an unexpected twist to end the album. It sounded like something out of a haunted house fright track.

Chloe Agnew / 'Tis the Season to be Merry (Roswell, GA - 2019)
« on: January 01, 2020, 05:38:59 PM »
On December 6, 2019, I saw Chloë ’Tis the Season to be Merry in Roswell, GA at the Roswell Cultural Arts Center. The show featured Chloë Agnew and the Atlanta Pops Orchestra Ensemble!

This was my first time seeing Chloë since her guest appearance in Lisa Kelly's show in early May and I hadn't met her since early December 2018. I was missing Chloë pretty badly.

I had seen Tim Janis (featuring Mairead Nesbitt and Lynn Hilary) at Carnegie Hall the previous night. I flew out of Newark, NJ mid-morning to Atlanta. Car rental at the airport in Atlanta took longer than expected (in excess of 45 minutes before I even got the keys).

I drove from the airport up to Roswell, GA. My GPS usually has a lot of problems around Atlanta, but this time, it got me where I needed to go without getting too squirly. Traffic however wasn't great. It took over an hour to get from the airport to the hotel in Roswell, GA. That was mid-afternoon, before rush hour.

I had originally planned to walk Vickery Creek Trail at Old Mill Park in Roswell, but with the delays at the airport and in traffic and with the late addition of a pre-show fan gathering near the venue, I decided to skip the trail, in spite of cool but dry weather. I had a quick shower and went straight from the hotel to the fan gathering.

The fan gathering, a meal at Lucky’s Bar & Grill, went pretty well. I think there were around 15 of us there. I was surprisingly sociable and I guess I've established enough of a presence on social media now that I didn't feel like I was sticking out like a sore thumb in the midst of so many long-time super-fans. I was especially surprised I was in the mood to talk considering the day had started with a pretty harsh bout of anxiety and depression. It took quite a bit of effort, but I managed to get myself back in a reasonable emotional state over the course of the afternoon so that I could have a chance to enjoy the show.

From the fan gathering, I went straight to the venue, the Roswell Cultural Arts Center. It wasn't too fancy, but it was adequate. We arrived pretty early, before they were letting people in. I walked around to find the stage doors. There were quite a few possibilities around the building. But as it turned out, there would be a "surprise" Meet and Greet after the show within the venue lobby anyways.

I was in the second row for this show, having mulled over whether or not to go for quite a while before finally deciding to get a ticket and risk conflicts with weather or other shows during the holiday concert season. It was a pretty good seat, though quite a way from the stage at this venue.

I wasn't sure she could see me at first. She normally at least gives me a smile a few times during her shows, but I didn't get any love or looks at all in the first half. I guess she found me at some point because in the second half, she gave me a shout-out for having traveled the furthest (that she knows of) to see her at the show! I'm genuinely surprised to have gotten a shout-out at that show as there were plenty of fans in the audience that have done FAR more to support her over the years than I have and have been to dozens or hundreds of more shows.

Chloë was accompanied by an ensemble (subset) of the Atlanta Pops orchestra. It sounded really good, but there's nothing like hearing her perform with a full orchestra behind her.

Chloë was in about half the songs, with the Pops orchestra doing their own thing in between. Most songs were Christmas songs, but she performed some songs from her regular set list as well. Her and her long-time boyfriend Dermot did a few duets together. Chloë looked and sounded great!

You Raise Me Up has never been my favourite Celtic Woman cover song. It's never really had the same wow factor for me as a lot of their other songs. But for some reason for the second night in a row, that song really affected me. Both Mairead's version at Carnegie Hall and Chloë's version in Roswell were tear-inducing.

It's my policy not to post set lists for Chloë's shows anymore, but I do have the set list if anyone is interested for some reason in having it shared privately.

Chloë was having LOTS of fun on stage during this show. Beyond her vocal talents, she's got a very engaging personality. Because I waited so long to write this report without having made adequate notes to reference, I don't remember a lot of the details from the show. There was a pretty funny moment though where Chloë came out with two jackets for the audience to choose for the conductor. The conductor wore the selected jacket for the rest of the show.

After the show was a "surprise" M+G (it was announced during the show). It's my general policy to not get any gifts for the performers unless there's a guaranteed Meet and Greet announced well in advance of the show, so I didn't have anything for her. This was my first time seeing Chloë since her Indiegogo campaign and album release. She seemed pleased to see me. Some of you know why.

In spite of there being no pre-announced Meet and Greet, I did have some things to say to her, planned and rehearsed. Like my previous Meet and Greet with her, Chloë could sense I was nervous and about to pour my heart out in front of her, so she took my hands and squeezed them for support. I've said it before and I'll say it again: Chloë's Meet and Greets are the best I have ever experienced. She doesn't give out tons of free stuff like Lindsay Stirling does, but she gives you the time you need to say what you want to say with her. She's there to offer genuine support to you. And she's so appreciative to everyone she meets. She gave me some really big amazing hugs.

After the Meet and Greet, some of us went over to a nearby IHOP for some food. I had strawberry banana pancakes this time, which were really tasty. I must say the before-and-after fan gatherings were some of the best I've experienced so far. Everyone was easy to get along with. I had some good conversations about Chloë and what she and Celtic Woman have meant in our lives.

There were at least 2 notably different set lists for the 2019 Celtic Woman: Magic of Christmas tour.

- Mairead Carlin was using the Ancient Land intro to Danny Boy by the Denver show (perhaps that started earlier)
- John Hunt (the bagpiper) started Amazing Grace song from the balcony or from somewhere else off stage early in the tour. Later in the tour, he started Amazing Grace on-stage, but started We Three Kings off stage.
